<p>The Großer Beerberg is a mountain located in the Thuringian Forest, Germany, and the highest point in the state of Thuringia. The nearest town is Suhl.</p><br>
<p>Between the summit of the Beerberg and that of its eastern neighbour, the Schneekopf (978 m), the second highest mountain of Thuringia, is a 60-metre-deep col. To the west is the Sommerbachskopf (941 m).</p><br>
<p>On the summit of Beerberg is one of the few moorlands of the Thuringian Forest. Until the end of the 1980s there was an observation tower on the mountain. A few years ago, a small platform was again established below the summit at Plänckners Aussicht, which offers an outstanding view to the south and southwest.</p><br>
<p>The section of the Rennsteig long-distance path between Oberhof and Schmücke runs across the mountain.</p><br>
<p>Chickasaw Shipyard Village Historic District is a historic district comprising buildings and areas within Chickasaw, Alabama, now a northern suburb of Mobile in Mobile County. The site is historically significant due to its role as a company town for the Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard during the first half of the twentieth century. In addition, the area was the focal point of a United States Supreme Court case concerning First Amendment rights of individuals in privately owned towns. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 3, 2004.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<h3>Incorporation of Chickasaw</h3><br>
<p>Early in 1946, Leedy Investment Company purchased the entire company town for one million dollars. Current occupants were given the option to purchase the homes they had been renting. Many prior residents also purchased homes and moved back to the town. The city of Chickasaw was incorporated on November 12, 1946. The resurgence was short-lived and the facility was closed again in 1983. The former shipyard now serves as a small general cargo facility.</p><br>
<h2>Chickasaw Shipyard Village</h2><br>
<p>The company town of Chickasaw was originally owned by Chickasaw Shipbuilding. In addition to well-built and attractive houses, the town included other amenities (a multipurpose community center, a school, a health clinic, and stores) and utility services (a water purification plant, and sewage treatment plant). One exceptionally well-built building originally served as an ice house while later serving as a home to offices and a hospital. Some of the streets in the town were actually sidewalks necessitating use of alleys for vehicular traffic. Tennis courts and a golf course were also available in the town. With the closing of the shipyard of Chickasaw Shipbuilding, many houses were moved or demolished.</p><br>
<p>Upon the purchase of the shipyard and town by Gulf Shipbuilding in 1940, the existing homes were repaired and modified and additional city improvements (such as street paving) were implemented. The establishments included a drugstore, a grocery store, a restaurant, and post office. By 1943, Gulf Shipbuilding had leased the remaining space to other businesses.</p><br>
<p>Many of the original homes still remain in Chickasaw and form the heart of a historic district. Primarily through the efforts of Gene Ford, an architectural historian from the University of Alabama, this area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The Chickasaw Historic Preservation Society has created a driving tour featuring the highlights of the area.</p><br>
<p>The Breiteberg is a mountain in the Lausitzer Bergland in Free State of Saxony, Federal Republic of Germany, with an altitude of 510 m above mean sea level. It is the local mountain of Hainewalde, and automobiles can reach it from the village in 30 min. Phonolite covers most of its surface.</p><br>
<h2>Location and surroundings</h2><br>
<p>The Breiteberg is located in the transition are between the Zittauer Mountains (Zittauer Gebirge) and the Lausitzer Bergland between the villages Hainewalde, Großschönau and Bertsdorf.</p><br>

<p>The mountain has sparked many legends in the past few centuries. To name are the "Querxe", kind of twarfs said to have been living in the mountain, "Der Wilde Jäger auf dem Breitenberge" as well as "Der Drache auf dem Breitenberge".</p><br>
<p>1467, hidden Zittauer inflicted casualties on the Hussites and killed 150 as they tried to escape to Bohemia after a successful prowl.</p><br>
<p>1880, Johann Franz Vorknecht opened a summer restaurant on top of the Breiteberg. It is one of the area&#39;s oldest mountain restaurants (Bergbaude).</p><br>
<p>1936 the Dr.-Kurt-Heinke-Turm was constructed. It shall remind on a "verdienstvollen Kenner der Südoberlausitz".</p><br>
<p>1881 a monument for Frederick III, a German Emperor was built on the north side with the inscription "Learn to suffer without complaining" (German org: "Lerne leiden ohne zu klagen"). The monument, made of bronze on a stone plinth had an altitude of 5m and was created by the reputable company "Gladebeck und Sohn" from Berlin. The monument was removed in 1949, nowadays solely the stone plinth is left.</p><br>
<h2>Look-out</h2><br>
<p>The top is wooded but the look-out provides a superb panoramic view in all directions towards the Lusatian and Zittauer Mountains, the Lausitzer Bergland, the Landeskrone nearby Görlitz, the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše and the Ještěd. The key for the look-out can be fetched from the restaurant.</p><br>
<h2>Ways to the hilltop</h2><br>
<p>Three ways lead to the hilltop, whereof two are illuminated. A bike path leads uphill from Bertsdorf which is also used for logistics of the restaurant. The "Martin-Köhler-Weg" from Hainewalde is for hikers.</p><br>

<p>The Music Building is an academic building of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, and a contributing property to the Schenley Farms National Historic District. A Longfellow, Alden & Harlow-designed mansion that was originally the home of the pastor of a neighboring church and former university chancellor, it also served as the home to a local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, as chemical laboratories, and as the first home of educational television station WQED and that stations original production site for Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Today it is home to the University of Pittsburghs Department of Music and the schools Theodore M. Finney Music Library.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The original mansion was designed by Longfellow, Alden & Harlow as a sandstone Richardsonian Romanesque mansion in 1884. The mansion was commissioned by Carrie T. Holland, youngest daughter of pioneer Pittsburgh iron manufacturer James K. Moorehead, as a gift for her husband William Jacob Holland, pastor of Bellefield Presbyterian Church at Fifth and Bellefield avenues in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. William Jacob Holland was also a nationally recognized zoologist, paleontologist, and entomologist and went on to become a trustee (1886) and then chancellor (1891–1901) of the University of Pittsburgh, then called the Western University of Pennsylvania.</p><br>
<p>The Hollands house sat across the street from Hollands church, Bellefield Presbyterian, a wooden structure that was replaced by a stone Richardsonian Romanesque structure designed by Frederick J. Osterling in 1890 that matched his house. The Hollands sold their house some time before 1912. It became a Knights of Columbus club before being purchased in 1936 by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company for laboratory operations of its subsidiary, Columbia-Southern Chemical Corporation. Pittsburgh Plate Glass donated the building to the University of Pittsburgh in 1953 in order for the university to establish it as the home for the citys first educational television station, WQED. The building therefore became the original home of the Public Broadcasting Service station, and the original production site of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, before becoming the home of Pitt&#39;s music department.</p><br>
<p>A one-story addition was added presumably in the 1920s which was given a Richardsonian Romanesque stone facing, estimated to have been added in the 1950s, that matched the original house. The university&#39;s Department of Music moved into the building in 1971 from its previous quarters on the ninth floor of the Cathedral of Learning. The Music Building was renovated in 2003 which included the installation of elevators. It also houses the Music Department Library, a piano lab, the electronic music studio, the ethnomusicology lab, a student/faculty lounge, practice rooms, teaching studios, offices, seminar rooms, and classrooms. It also contains the William Russell Robinson Recording Studio that is a 32-track digital recording facility which offer students hands-on experience in the latest recording techniques and technology.</p><br>
<p>In 1967, the Bellefield Presbyterian Church merged with and moved to the First United Presbyterian Church at Fifth and Thackeray, which adopted its name. The old church was dismantled in 1985 except for its tower, which still stands.</p><br>
<h2>Library</h2><br>
<p>The Theodore M. Finney Music Library is located in the basement of the Music Building and contains a general music research collection as well as several collections of important musical materials. The library is named for the former head of the music department who donated his personal collection to the school. The library&#39;s holdings include approximately 65,000 music scores and books, 25,000 sound recordings, 1,500 microforms, and 150 journals. Collections include Early American hymnals and tunebooks, volumes of sheet music with regional significance, seventeenth and eighteenth century prints of English sacred and secular works, and music belonging to the late William Steinberg and Fidelis Zitterbart.</p><br>
<p>The Ngang Pass  is a mountain pass on the border of the provinces of Quảng Bình and Hà Tĩnh, in the North Central Coast of Vietnam. National Route 1A crosses it as it traverses the Hoành Sơn, a side-spur of the larger Annamite Range. The pass is 2,560 m long, ascending to the height of 250 m .</p><br>
<p>Historical French texts refer to the pass as Porte d&#39;Annam.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>It marked the former boundary of Champa and Dai Viet until the 15th century when the Vietnamese pushed south and conquered the Cham lands piecemeal.</p><br>
<p>Controlling the strategic pass was a priority through the ages as the narrow neck of land could be choked off. At the summit of Ngang Pass remains the Hoành Sơn Quan (Transverse Mountain Gate), a masonry gateway built by Vietnam&#39;s last dynasty, the Nguyễn to regulate the foot traffic across the mountain.</p><br>
<p>The scenic pass is also well known in Vietnamese literature, its beauty having been sung by many writers, perhaps the most well-known is the poem by Bà Huyện Thanh Quan.</p><br>
<h2>20th century</h2><br>
<p>The pass was once a major hindrance to land transportation with its winding and steep grade. A modern tunnel has since bypassed the climb, shortening the driving time through the pass as well as making it safer for drivers. The serpentine road ascending the pass is now used by sightseers only.</p><br>
<p>The Hải Vân Pass , is an approximately 21 km long mountain pass on National Route 1A in Vietnam. It traverses a spur of the larger Annamite Range that juts into the East Sea of Viet Nam, on the border of Đà Nẵng and Thừa Thiên–Huế Province, near Bạch Mã National Park. Its name refers to the mists that rise from the sea, reducing visibility. Historically, the pass was a physical division between the kingdoms of Champa and Đại Việt.</p><br>
<p>The twisting road on the pass has long been a challenge for drivers traveling between the cities of Huế and Đà Nẵng. Since the completion of Hải Vân Tunnel, traffic flow and safety have improved. The pass has been the scene of at least two of Vietnam&#39;s most serious rail accidents, and at least one air crash.</p><br>
<h2>Overview</h2><br>
<p>The Hải Vân Pass crosses over a spur of the Trường Sơn (Annamite) Range that emerges from the west and juts into the South China Sea, forming the Hải Vân Peninsula and the adjoining Son Tra Island. The pass, which once formed the boundary between the kingdoms of Đại Việt and Champa, also forms a boundary between the climates of northern and southern Vietnam, sheltering the city of Da Nang from the "Chinese winds" that blow in from the northwest. During the winter months (November–March), for instance, weather on the north side of the pass might be wet and cold, while the south side might be warm and dry.</p><br>
<p>The pass is renowned for its scenic beauty.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Hải Vân Pass has been of major strategic importance in this history of Vietnam, and for a long time represented a major barrier to any land army that attempted to move between the northern and central regions of the country.</p><br>
<p>During the 1st century A.D., the Chinese general Ma Yuan (Mã Viện), after pacifying northern Vietnam, advanced south and established the southern border of the Han (Hán) empire by setting up columns of bronze, possibly at Hải Vân. Ma Yuan also left behind some Chinese military families to hold the frontier. When the Han empire collapsed at the end of the 2nd century, the local kingdom of Linyi (Lâm Ấp), the predecessor to the medieval polity of Champa, was created by a petty frontier bureaucrat of the Han administration, probably in the area of modern Huế somewhat to the north.</p><br>
<h2>Transport</h2><br>
<p>The pass is crossed by two main transport routes: Vietnam&#39;s main north–south highway, National Route 1A, and the North–South Railway. The road crosses over the mountain more or less directly, climbing to an elevation of 496 m and passing south of the 1,172 m high Ai Van Son peak, while the railway hugs the coastline more closely, passing through a series of tunnels along the way. Since its opening in 2005, the Hải Vân Tunnel—the longest tunnel in Southeast Asia—offers an alternative road across the pass, reducing travel times by at least an hour.</p><br>
<h3>Accidents</h3><br>
<p>Besides its beauty, the pass is also renowned for its difficulty. A poem by Nguyễn Phúc Chu (1675–1725) describes Hải Vân as "the most dangerous mountain in Vietnam" (Việt Nam hiểm ải thử sơn điên). Visibility on the pass is often reduced by the eponymous mists that rise from the sea. Along with the roads winding route through the pass, this posed a serious challenge for drivers before the construction of the Hải Vân Tunnel. The Hai Van Pass has also been the scene of at least two of Vietnams most serious rail accidents, and at least one air crash.</p><br>
<p>June 24, 1953 – 1953 Col des Nuages derailment: "About 100 or more" were killed when two locomotives and 18 cars of a passenger train plunged 50 feet through a sabotaged viaduct in the Col des Nuages, now known as the Hai Van Pass. Officials said that a strong explosive charge went off just as the train arrived at the viaduct, tumbling a 25-foot span into the ravine. The pass had frequently been the scene of attacks by the Viet Minh.</p><br>
<p>December 28, 1969 - a United States Marine Corps CH-46 helicopter #153379 from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364, crashed in Hai Van pass. The aircraft had experienced radio problems while flying at night in instrument conditions. All 10 crew and passengers were killed in the crash. <p>March 12, 2005 – 2005 Phú Lộc derailment: An express passenger train on the North–South Railway derailed north of the Pass, in Phú Lộc District, Thừa Thiên–Huế Province, killing 11 people and injuring hundreds, many of which were in a serious condition after the crash. The accident occurred while the train was traveling southbound from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.</p><br>
<p>Allen Hall at the University of Pittsburgh is a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark and a contributing property to the Schenley Farms National Historic District. Completed in 1914 and originally serving as the home to the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, the six story Greek Revival building designed by J. H. Giesey now serves as the home of the university&#39;s Department of Physics and Astronomy.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The building that would become known as Allen Hall was erected as the original home for the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. The institute was founded for industrial and chemical research by brothers, and University of Pittsburgh alumni, Richard B. Mellon and Andrew W. Mellon. The institute originally grew out of university&#39;s Department of Industrial Research and served as a graduate school managed by the University of Pittsburgh until it was incorporated as an independent non-profit research institute in 1927.</p><br>
<p>The six story building designed by J. H. Giesey in the Greek Revival style of the universitys other buildings that at the time were being constructed in accordance with Henry Hornbostels acropolis master plan for the university campus. It was erected from 1913 to 1914 at a cost of $230,000 ($ in dollars) to construct and equip, and it was dedicated on February 26, 1915, in a ceremony in which the Mellon brothers turned over the keys of the institute to university Chancellor Samuel McCormick.</p><br>
<p>The facility originally contained low temperature and heavy equipment rooms in its basement; general offices, a library, assembly room, dark room and a special apparatus room on its first floor; and research laboratories on its upper floors.</p><br>
<p>The institute soon outgrew this facility and engaged in the construction of a new facility on the corner of Bellefield and Fifth Avenue across from the grounds of the universitys Cathedral of Learning. After completion of the new facility in 1937, the old Mellon Institute building was handed over to the university on May 9, 1939. It was remodeled and equipped to provide laboratories and additional classrooms for the School of Medicine, doubling that schools facilities that were then located in Pennsylvania Hall. The School of Medicines library, administrative offices, several faculty offices, histology and embryology labs, as well as its departments of physiologic chemistry, physiology and pharmacy all moved into the building, freeing Pennsylvania Hall of all but the medical schools first year courses in anatomy and pathology. The School of Medicine began moving into its present facility, Scaife Hall, in the fall of 1955. Today Allen Hall is home to offices, classrooms, and labs of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.</p><br>
<p>The building was renamed Allen Hall in honor of a former University of Pittsburgh Physics professor, Alexander J. Allen, who arrived at Pitt in the 1930s and led a project for the construction of a cyclotron for producing radioactive isotopes for medical applications and atomic research. This facility, called the Sarah Mellon Scaife Radiation Laboratory, was completed in 1946. During World War II, Allen also participated in the development of radar systems.</p><br>
<h2>Structure</h2><br>
<p>Allen Hall comprises six stories (a ground floor and 1st–5th floors) using granite for the lower two stories and buff brick for the next three stories; the 5th floor is windowless and concealed by the roof. Due to the buildings age and landmark status, and despite internal renovations, all floors, with the exception of the 1st (following the most recent renovation) and 3rd (due to the flying tunnel connection to NPL), have only one bathroom; the bathrooms alternate male-female, with the fifth floors being coed. This is due to a space-saving decision by the original designers that women&#39;s bathrooms were unnecessary in a science building. The building is linked on the first three floors to neighboring Old Engineering Hall, and on the 1st and 3rd to the Van de Graaff Building housing the Nuclear Physics Laboratory located at the rear.</p><br>
<p>The facade at the entrance of this building has a plaque to honor Madame Curie, commemorating the 100th anniversary in 1967 of her birth, the conferring of an honorary degree in 1921, her visit to the plants of the Standard Chemical Company, its role as a major radium producer and in the making of the gram of radium presented to Marie Curie by President Warren G. Harding, and the role of Glenn Donald Kammer, a University of Pittsburgh graduate who supervised its production. The plaque was unveiled on September 20, 1969 by the Archbishop of Kraków, Poland, Cardinal Wojtyła, who in 1978 became Pope John Paul II.</p><br>
<p>Renovations, upgrades, and improvements for Allen Hall, Old Engineering Hall, Van de Graaff Building and Thaw Hall, were carried out from 2011–2013, with the creation and renovation of 13 Department of Astronomy and Physics laboratories located in Allen Hall, Old Engineering Hall, and the Van de Graaff Building. To allow for major internal reconstruction, Allen hall was temporarily vacated for the 2012–2013 academic year, with residents relocated to Thaw, Old Engineering, and Thackeray Halls. The renovations were completed on schedule and Allen was reoccupied at the beginning of the 2013–2014 academic year. The most unusual result of the renovations was the installation of a double rail over the original railing in the main staircase, due to it being below regulation height.</p><br>
<p>Jonas Salk Hall at the University of Pittsburgh is a Pennsylvania state and Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark. The Art Deco building is named after Jonas Salk, who conducted his research on the first polio vaccine in a basement laboratory while on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The main structure of Salk Hall is the former city owned Pittsburgh Municipal Hospital for Contagious Diseases constructed in 1941 on land the university had given to the city. It was designed by Richard Irving and Theodore Eicholz. The hospital was built as a project by President Roosevelts Public Works Administration. The 225-bed hospital was originally part of the Medical Center associated with the University and was intended to be used primarily to treat communicable diseases. However, when antibiotics virtually eliminated the need to quarantine patients, the building had become a financial burden on the city. Therefore, in September 1949, work began on remodeling the building, and it temporarily housed Pitts School of Public Health. In October 1957, the Municipal Hospital was formally acquired from the city for $1.3 million ($ million today) and renamed Jonas Salk Hall. For a time, the upper floors of the building served as a residence for students. Pitt remodeled it to house the School of Dental Medicine and School of Pharmacy in 1961-1962.</p><br>
<h2>Annex</h2><br>
<p>The Salk Hall Annex, a major renovation and three-story addition designed by the architectural firm Deeter, Ritchey, and Sippel for the Dental School, was completed the Terrace Street side of the building in 1967 for a cost of over $5 million ($ million today). Today, it serves as a main entrance for Salk Hall and the dental clinics.</p><br>
<p>A new $50.6 million ($ million today) addition and renovation to Salk Hall was announced in January 2010. It will include the construction of an 80,000 ft&sup2; research tower in the parking area behind the existing building by Ballinger Architects with associates DRS Architects. The new tower is planned to house laboratories and support spaces relocated from their current home in Salk Hall in order to free up space for additional classrooms and offices in the original structure. The target completion date is July, 2014.</p><br>
<h2>Dental Museum</h2><br>
<p>A dental museum is housed in the first floor reception area of Salk Hall. The museum contains a variety of original dental artifacts, including a c. 1910 dental chair, and x-ray machine and instrument cabinet from the 1920s.</p><br>
<h2>Pharmacy Museum</h2><br>
<p>Also contained in Salk Hall is the Elmer H. Grimm Sr. Pharmacy Museum, which opened in the fall of 1996. Located on the fourth floor, the museum holds pharmacy memorabilia such as drug products, equipment, and sundry products dating back to the early 20th century. Among the museum&#39;s possessions are two hand-carved finials, which were often found over the door or partitions that separated the main part of the pharmacy from the back room where pharmacists did most of their work, an old-fashioned powder mill, and a konseal machine.</p><br>
<p>Sornfelli is a mountain plateau on the island of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands about 12 km from the capital Tórshavn . It is the site of a military station at 725 m asl. The Sornfelli Meteorological Station installed in 1999 is located in the middle of the 40000 m2 Sornfelli Mountain top plateau at 725 m asl.</p><br>

<p>The mountain Sornfelli has a height of 749 m.</p><br>
<p>Chepiwanoxet  is a neighborhood in Warwick, Rhode Island, with an island peninsula in Greenwich Bay, an arm of Narragansett Bay. The neighborhood straddles the Amtrak railroad lines, which lay just east of and parallel to the Post Road . Its boundaries are Neptune Street to the North, Alger Avenue to the South, Post Road to the West, and Greenwich Bay to the East. Chepiwanoxet Way, an underpass beneath the Amtrak lines, now serves as the only street access in and out of the neighborhood.</p><br>
<p>Native Americans, who fished its island and shores, named this area between Post Road and Greenwich Bay "Chepiwanoxet." Settled as a colonial farm in early 18th century, it became a beach resort with hotel and shore dinner hall after the Chepiwanoxet railroad station opened cc. 1837. Small lots were sold for summer cottages to upstate residents and for homes to workers in Cowesett hill estates in late 19th century. Before World War I, the Gallaudet Corporation built a causeway to the island for its seaplane factory, with many workers living here. Warwick bought the island in 1994 for a city park.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>Chepiwanoxet, known also in earlier sources as Chepinoxet, is a Narragansett word. It may be derived from chepi &#39;separated,&#39; -wan (particle) -ok &#39;little&#39; -sett &#39;place&#39;, meaning perhaps &#39;Little Separated Place,&#39; or possibly &#39;Little Place at the Northeast,&#39; compare chepewéssin &#39;northeast wind.&#39;</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Chepiwanoxet is underlaid by sedimentary rocks of the Coal Age (Pennsylvanian period, about 300 million years old). This rock formation is 60 mi long, extending from Hanover, Massachusetts, south to the mouth of Narragansett Bay, and 18 mi wide from Providence to Fall River. It underlies the entire Narragansett Bay, including the Providence River, Greenwich Bay, Fall River, the Sakonnet River, plus both East and West passages out to the ocean. Chepiwanoxet and East Greenwich are just inside the western edge of the Rhode Island formation.</p><br>
<p>The new Bedrock Geologic Map of Rhode Island gives more details of what underlies the unconsolidated surface material. Chepiwanoxet sits atop the western edge of the Rhode Island Formation of the stratified Narragansett Bay Group of the Pennsylvanian period (between 323 and 290 million years ago). The Narragansett Bay Group rocks are part of the Esmond-Dedham subterrane of the Southeastern New England Avalon zone. Uphill from the Post Road (US Route 1) is the boundary between the Rhode Island Formation and the older Scituate Igneous Suite (granite and diorite/gabbro rock) of the Devonian period (408 to 362 million years ago), which extends westward to the Connecticut border.</p><br>
<p>The real beginning of Chepiwanoxet Island came as a result of the last great ice sheets, which bulldozed rock and stone from Canada to Rhode Island. Along the way, each glacier gouged up billions of cubic meters of underlying bedrock, and then ground local and imported rocks together, creating much of the glacial deposits existing today. When the Earth&#39;s temperature rose about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, the glaciers began melting faster than they were moving forward leaving huge deposits of sand and feeding many rivers and streams that rose sea level and washed sand into the coves and bays. For extended periods, the ice advance equaled the rate of melt, and piles of sediment were deposited in terminal or end moraines, such as on Block Island and in Charlestown (hills in the southern part of the state).</p><br>
<p>The Soil Survey of Rhode Island lists Chepiwanoxet Point and nearby shores as "Hinckley gravelly sandy loam&quot a very porous, well-drained soil of glacial origin, which is of poor topsoil quality. The soil type change (to a bit of "Walpole sandy loam", associated with severe wetness) can only occur in the marsh.</p><br>
<h2>Island Creation Theory</h2><br>
<p>The island was created as an outwash deposit during a brief pause in the last glacial retreat from melt water runoff carrying eroded sand down a stream from the high hills (Love Lane and Cowesett Hills area) forming a navigable river mouth called Arnold’s Cove (cc. 1800s). The island&#39;s tidal flow between Greenwich Cove to the South and Chepiwanoxet Beach to the North kept the small cove open with a navigable channel for small boat use and presumably good shellfishing.</p><br>
<p>Early bay navigation charts (e.g. 1777 Charles Blaskowitz; US Geological Survey 1891 Atlas of Rhode Island; ca. 1895 Narragansett Bay) and city maps (1831 Stevens map of Warwick) clearly show Chepiwanoxet as an island separated by water from the mainland.</p><br>
<p>A causeway built by the Gallaudet Corporation (cc. 1916) allowed truck access to the island for seaplane manufacturing factory. Arnold Cove today a silted in marsh with only a narrow, winding channel, exiting North toward Chepiwanoxet Beach that is no longer navigable. The cove is quickly being populated by Phragmites reed grass, an invasive species that can grow over 15&#39; high and quickly crowds out natural habitats. If uncontrolled Phragmites may totally fill the entire cove in several decades.</p><br>
<p>The shore along Chepiwanoxet once was one long winding sandy beach continually fed by erosion of the many high hills along the bays West coast. But with development by railroad and home shore erosion protection with rock rip-rap, stone and cement walls that virtually stopped beach nourishment. Chepiwanoxet&#39;s beaches are mostly eroded away leaving rocky shores with sand stripped away by naturally occurring long-shore currents moving South and East north of the island and North and East south of the island. The two currents, along with Arnold Cove&#39;s river deposits, helped add sand to create the island along with its two long shallow sandbars heading Northeast and Southeast.</p><br>
<h2>Key Modern History Facts</h2><br>
<p>The island became a peninsula in the early 20th century when the Gallaudet Aircraft Company constructed America&#39;s first seaplane-only factory at Chepiwanoxet cc. 1916. For truck access to the factory, fill was dumped into the marsh, making a causeway from Alger Avenue that still remains. As a result of blocking water circulation around the island, Arnold Cove lost its boat channel from silt deposits in the tidal marsh located on the North side of the island. With the island made of sand deposits it was subject to shore erosion. The Gallaudet Company built wood bulkheads around the North, East and South shores with rock rip-rap on the waterside and fill behind. With many factory workers living north of the old cove, a narrow wood plank bridge was built across the marsh to allow quicker access to/from work.</p><br>
<p>During the Gallaudet Factory period, the Bostich Staple Corporation, located in East Greenwich, was allowed to dump hundreds of truckloads of waste metal staples along the east facing shore behind the wood bulkhead to control erosion from the 1930s to the early 1950s. The staples rusted in large heaps that gradually were eroded/dissolved by the salt water. In the early 2000s after becoming a city park, Warwick had most of the remaining rust piles removed, but beach walkers can still discover small rust pieces lying about which locals jokingly call "Bostaplite" rock. A few wood piles remain widely scattered along the shore.</p><br>
<p>The factory built seaplanes, including the Gallaudt &#39;Battlecruiser&#39; D series for the U.S. Navy in World War I. Following the war and loss of government interest in seaplanes, the corporation moved to Connecticut, leaving its factory empty and virtually unused through World War II. Currently all the factory buildings have been demolished, but two cement floors remain with the larger floor of the metal boiler plant and the smaller floor, a bit to the Northwest, was the brick kiln for drying wood for the seaplanes. That floor has a brick border showing where the building walls surrounded that kiln.</p><br>
<p>In 1946 the Amtrol Company started on Chepiwanoxet Island by the brothers Chester and Kenneth Kirk. The factory manufactured water pressure control tanks in one of the empty seaplane buildings. They worked there until 1953 when hurricane Carol hit Rhode Island and flooded the factory grounds. The Kirk brothers and two other employees survived the flood by floating on a garage door to the shore near the old Warwick Coal Company about two miles north. The company immediately moved their manufacturing to higher ground in West Warwick.</p><br>
<p>A few years after hurricane Carol, the Chepiwanoxet Marina was built on the island using a surviving building for inside winter storage. Its wood piers pointed south into Greenwich Cove. That marina, according to Frank Pettis longtime owner of Pettis Marine in Pawtuxet, was the first true marina built in Rhode Island. It was not converted from a boatyard, but built specifically for pleasure craft. The marina lasted less than 10 years. Today one can see some original marina piles where the docks once floated. Note that the piles all lean south showing effects of winter ice pressure out from the shore.</p><br>
<p>In 1994 the island was purchased by the City of Warwick as the Chepiwanoxet Park and is open to the public, but with limited parking. Visitors can walk the shore especially when below high tide, or along several sandy trails crossing the island. Shellfishing is allowed along the North and East facing sides on Greenwich Bay, but closed along the South shore facing Greenwich Cove.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Chepiwanoxet Point is mapped on the East Greenwich 7.5-minute quadrangle. Bedrock and surficial geologic maps for the quadrangle were published by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Rhode Island State Geologist.</p><br>
<p>Bolca is a village in the Veneto, on the southern margin of the Italian Alps. It is a frazione of the comune of Vestenanova, in the province of Verona. The area is famous for the marine fossils from the lagerstätte of Monte Bolca. It was one of the first fossil sites with high quality preservation known to Europeans, and is still an important source of fossils from the Eocene.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Bolca lies in the Lessini Alps. Monte Bolca was originally at the bottom of the Tethys Ocean before being uplifted from the ocean floor during the formation of the Alps. This happened in two stages, one 24 million years ago and one between 30 and 50 million years ago.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The area was settled in prehistoric times, there are remains of a hill fort on Monte Purga dating from around 1000 BC. The Romans were active in the area, and by 1000AD the village had come under the control of a convent of the Augustinian Eremitani. In the thirteenth century the fortunes of the Vestenanova area were closely tied to the Ghibelline Ezzelino da Romano family, the Lords of Verona, whose estates were razed in 1260. The Mezzagonellas castle of "Bubulka cum Vulpiana" was seized by Mastino I della Scala, Ezzelino III da Romanos successor, from Ludovico count of San Bonifacio during the 1269-70 war between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. From then on the village was part of Verona, but gained its independence in 1326 by edict of Cangrande I della Scala. In 1387 the area passed to the Duchy of Milan; under Gian Maria Visconti it fell to Venetian rule from 1410 until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. After the defeat of Napoleon, the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia became part of the Austrian Empire, during which time Francis I of Austria spent three days in Bolca. In 1821 Bolca was split from Volpiano, the former being joined to Vestenanova, whilst Volpiano became a frazione of Crespadoro, a town now in the province of Vicenza.</p><br>
<p>The fossils at Monte Bolca have been known since at least the 16th century, and were studied intensively in the 19th century once it was definitively proven that fossils were the remnants of dead animals.</p><br>
<h2>Fossils</h2><br>
<p>Strictly speaking, the Monte Bolca site is one specific spot near the village of Bolca in Italy, known as the Pesciara ("The Fishbowl") due to its many extraordinarily well preserved Eocene fish fossils. However, there are several other related outcroppings in the general vicinity that also carry fossils, such as Monte Postale and Monte Vegroni. The term Monte Bolca is used interchangeably to refer to the original site, or to all the sites collectively.</p><br>
<p>The entire formation consists of 19 m of lithographic limestone, all of which contain fossils, but interspersed in which are the lagerstätte layers that contain the highly preserved specimens. Within these layers, the fish and other specimens are so highly preserved that their organs are often completely preserved in fossil form, and even the skin color can sometimes be determined. The normal rearrangement of the specimens caused by mud-dwelling organisms in the layer before it turned to stone has been avoided—it is assumed that the mud in question was low in oxygen, preventing both decay and the action of scavengers.</p><br>
<p>Fossils from Monte Bolca are commonly available for sale by commercial fossil dealers, and due to their popularity and preservation regularly sell for several hundred euros. Fossil species include the moonfish Mene rhombea and Mene oblonga, the batfish Eoplatax papilio, the spadefish Exellia velifer, the "angelfish" carangid, Ceratoichthys, a crocodile, Crocodilus vicetinus, and a snake, Archaeophis bolcaensis.</p><br>
<h2>Economy</h2><br>
<p>The area is dependent on tourism and agriculture; the famous wine regions of Valpolicella and Soave lie just to the south. In the village there is a museum with three rooms of fossils from the area.</p><br>
<p>The Robert P. Parker House is a house located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, United States. The house was designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1892 and is an example of his early work. Real-estate agent Thomas H. Gale had it built and sold it to Robert P. Parker later that year. The house was designed by Wright independently while he was still employed by Adler and Sullivan, something architect Louis Sullivan forbade. The Parker House is listed as a contributing property to a USA federally Registered Historic District.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Robert P. Parker House is one of three houses along Chicago Avenue in Oak Park which have come to be known as American architect Frank Lloyd Wright&#39;s "Bootleg Houses." The Parker house is especially similar to the Thomas H. Gale House. The houses were designed on a speculative basis for Wright neighbor Walter Gale in 1892. In all, Wright designed nine "bootleg houses" moonlighting while still under contract with Sullivan. When Sullivan found out about the side projects, in late 1892 or early 1893, Wright was dismissed. While generally cast in the Queen Anne style of architecture the Parker House has more ample rounded forms than the common Queen Anne homes being built at the time.</p><br>
<p>The small size is deceiving as the Parker House is spacious. The turret bays have walls that are more than half consisted of windows. The fireplace is set in the center of the house which allows it to heat and service two rooms, the parlor and the dining room. The side elevations of the Parker House are symmetrical but adjacent buildings are built too close for the design to be seen clearly.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>Though small in size and adorned with inexpensive detailing, the Parker House and the Gale House are of significance because of what they reveal about Frank Lloyd Wright&#39;s development as an architect. The historic district was added to the USA National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 1973.</p><br>
<p>St. Vincent&#39;s Hospital was a Catholic hospital in Normandy, Missouri.</p><br>
<p>In 1858 the Sisters of Charity founded St. Vincents Sanitarium for those with nervous and mental diseases. The Hospital was located on St. Vincents Lane north of St. Charles Rock Road; the address is now 1600 Castle Park Dr, St. Louis, Missouri 63133 and is the current home of the Castle Park Apartments.</p><br>
<p>It opened in August 1858 at Ninth and Marion Streets in St. Louis with four patients and fifteen sisters.</p><br>
<p>In 1895, the home relocated to St. Vincent&#39;s Lane (the current Castle Park Drive), up a hilltop from the Rock Road in St. Louis County. This massive, castle-like building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>The 1930 St. Louis Census lists 357 individuals.</p><br>
<p>The home was in part financed by the patients&#39; fees. By 1941 the home was operated by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul for the treatment of mental and nervous disorders as well as selected cases of alcoholism and drug addiction. The home remained in existence until the 1980s.</p><br>
<p>The Census collection consists of three record books of the St. Vincent’s Institution for the Insane: cash ledger, 1858–1867; contracts of obligations for patients, 1859-circa 1890; and record of doctors prescriptions for patients, 1901-1904. It can be cited as, "Records of Saint Vincents Institution for the Insane, Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis".</p><br>
<p>The Surma-Meghna River System is a river complex in the Indian Subcontinent, one of the three that form the Ganges Delta, the largest on earth. It rises in the Manipur Hills of northeast India as the Barak River and flows west becoming the Surma River and then flows south as the Meghna River, a total of 946 km of which 669 km are within Bangladesh, to the Bay of Bengal.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<h3>Barak</h3><br>
<p>From its source in the Naga Hills of India, Liyai Village of Poumai Naga tribe, the river is known as the Barak River (locally known as Avoure). Near its source, the river receives a lot of little hill streams, including the Gumti, Howrah, Kagni, Senai Buri, Hari Mangal, Kakrai, Kurulia, Balujhuri, Shonaichhari and Durduria. It flows west through Manipur State, then southwest leaving Manipur and entering Mizoram State.</p><br>
<p>In Mizoram State the Barak flows southwest then veers abruptly north when joined by a north flowing stream and flows into Assam State where it turns northward again near Lakhipur as it enters the plains. It then flows west past the town of Silchar where it is joined by the Madhura River. After Silchar, it flows for about 30 km, and near Badarpur it divides into the Surma River and the Kushiyara River and enters Bangladesh. The principal tributaries of the Barak in India are the Jiri, the Dhaleshwari (Tlawng), the Singla, the Longai, the Madhura, the Sonai (Tuirial), the Rukni and the Katakhal.</p><br>
<h3>Surma</h3><br>
<p>After entering into modern Karimganj District in south Assam, Barak divides in two, with the northern branch being called the Surma River and the southern branch the Kushiyara River. At this point the river enters the Sylhet Depression (or trough) which forms the Surma Basin.</p><br>
<p>The Surma is fed by tributaries from the Meghalaya Hills to the north, and is also known as the Baulai River after it is joined by the south-flowing Someswari River.</p><br>
<p>The Kushiyara receives tributaries from the Sylhet Hills and Tripura Hills to the south, the principal one from the Tripura Hills being the Manu. The Kushiyara is also known as the Kai River after it is joined by a major offshoot (distributary) from the Surma. When the Surma and the Kushiyara finally rejoin in Kishoreganj District above Bhairab Bazar, the river is known as the Meghna River.</p><br>
<h3>Meghna</h3><br>
<p>The Meghna is formed inside Bangladesh above Bhairab Bazar by the combination of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers. Down to Chandupura, Meghna is hydrographically referred to as the Upper Meghna. After the Padma joins, it is referred to as the Lower Meghna.</p><br>
<p>In Daudkandi, Comilla, Meghna is joined by the great river Gumti, created by the combination of many streams. This river reinforces Meghna a lot and increases the waterflow considerably. The pair of bridges over Meghna and Gop and motiy are two of the country&#39;s longest bridges.</p><br>
<p>The name for the largest distributary of the Ganges in Bangladesh is the Padma River. When the Padma joins with the Jamuna River, the largest distributary of the Brahmaputra, and they join with the Meghna in Chandpur District, the result is the Lower Meghna.</p><br>
<p>After Chandpur, with the combined flow of the Padma and Jamuna, it moves down to the Bay of Bengal in an almost straight line. In the course from Chandpur to the Bay of Bengal, the Meghna splits into a number of little rivers, but the main flow is through the Meghna Estuary.</p><br>
<p>Near Bhola, just before flowing into the Bay of Bengal, the river divides into two main streams in the Ganges delta and separates an island from both sides of the mainland. The western stream is called Ilsha and the eastern one is called Bamni.</p><br>
<p>Svinør is an island in Lindesnes municipality in Vest-Agder county, Norway. The 0.3 km&sup2; island lies immediately south of the mainland by the village of Åvik. The island essentially forms the southern part of the Åvik village harbour. The island sits about half-way between the Lindesnes peninsula to the west and the town of Mandal to the east. The fishing village is very picturesque due to its wooden houses dating back to the 1700s and 1800s.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Svinør was once a very prosperous port with its own customs house. The port was a good port to protect ships in bad weather, especially near the harsh waters surrounding the Lindesnes peninsula (the Norwegian term uthavn meaning "exterior harbor"). During the early 1800s, there were over 100 residents on the small island, but by 1993, the last permanent resident left the island, leaving the island as a haven for holiday cottages that bring many residents each summer.</p><br>

The building has a high-pitched, hip roof which features polygonal dormers, a brick chimney and overhanging eaves (a feature that would later become common to Wright&#39;s Prairie style). On the northeast and southeast corners of the building are polygonal towers with conical roofs. The tower windows, arranged in horizontal bands (another common Prairie element), are a mix of casement windows and fixed windows. The non-original porch is seen in illustrations in the architectural guide map published by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust. The front elevation also has a dormer with a pair of casement windows.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>

<p>At first glance, the Thomas Gale House, along with the other bootleg houses, appear to devolve from the early promise of Wrights James Charnley House by including such historical styles as Colonial Revival, Queen Anne and Dutch Colonial. However, the houses illustrate Wrights burgeoning individuality as he adapted the styles to fit his own vision. The Thomas Gale and Parker Houses in particular represent a more streamlined version of the traditional Queen Anne style design. The houses incorporate rectilinear features which would later become hallmarks of Wright&#39;s fully mature Prairie design.</p><br>
<p>Keelathooval, in Tamil Nadu, India, is a village of some archaeological interest. It has six sites of archaeological importance.</p><br>
<h2>Archeological Sites</h2><br>
<h3>Ayyanar and Kali Temple</h3><br>
<p>The Ayyanar and Kali Temple is located 500 meters from the village, and has its own drinking water pond. The temple and the pond are preserved by the villagers for the annual festival. The large water pond used by the town for a swimming pool was deepened in the 1970s. When its floor was dug up, dozens of mudhumakkal Thazhis (burial urns) were discovered, along with earthen lamps and eating utensils, which were buried along with the urns in the belief that the dead may find light and food in the afterlife. These archaeological finds were reburied after their discovery.In this village a famous festival called ERUTHUKATTU is celebrated almost every year.Eruthukattu means taming specially nurtured,strong,fast, powerful and trained bulls by the village youth. This festival makes the village famous in the surrounding areas.</p><br>
<p>The annual Kudhirai Eduppu ( Horse Parade) ritual of this temple refers to the thwarting of the Turk Invasion,with the intervention of the deity,as per legend. It most likely refers to the siege of Malik Kafur.Malik Kafur.Malik Kafur</p><br>
<h3>Pallivasal</h3><br>
<p>The Pallivasal (Tamil for mosque or madarasa) is near the kuttivila grove, about a kilometer to the east of the village, where the Paramakudi-Mudukulathur Road passes. The kuttivila trees are preserved by the local populace, who regard the trees as holy.</p><br>
<h3>Seeraaa pallivaasal</h3><br>
<p>The Seeraa pallivaasal, about four kilometers in the south eastern direction, is devoid of any structures, but the ilandai tree there is considered holy. Ilandai trees are rare in this part of the Ramnad district. This site may have been a holy place in the pre-10th century A.D, when the Arabs who came to trade and settled along the Coromandel coast, as Keelathooval is 20 km from the Bay of Bengal.</p><br>
<h3>Muniappa Samy Temple</h3><br>
<p>The Muniappa Samy Temple, with its own holy pond, is of unknown origin, and the annual Maasi Kalari celebration is held here. The customs and rituals of these temples are looked after a family of hereditary trustees. The pond behind this temple is lined with huge banyan trees.</p><br>
<h3>Kudumboorani</h3><br>
<p>The Kudumboorani, with its holy tree, shelters a large variety of birds, as well as the remains of an ancient temple of Shiva. Stone pillars stand along with statues of deities and Soolayudam, the three pronged weapon of Shakti. The pond near this temple site is used as drinking water resource.</p><br>
<p>The living area of the people clusters in a circle around the temples of about four to five kilometers in diameter. The two headless standing statues of deities (or King and Queen) were vandalized during the pillage of Malik Kafur in A.D. 1311.</p><br>
<h3>Hero Stone</h3><br>
<p>The Hero Stone in front of the main Pillayar temple was removed, as it was located in the centre of a village pathway, though the location may have been a battle field. The tamarind tree next to the elementary school is also said to be standing on the site of a Muslim settlement which was destroyed by an invading force. Legend says that the women-folk of this entire community sealed themselves into a cellar underground so that they would not be defiled by the invaders. The place name Keelathooval means "Eastern Nest" in Malayalam, a language which is not spoken in the nearby area, but rather in the adjoining state of Kerala.</p><br>
<h2>Ancestry</h2><br>
<p>The present residents are traced to the lineage of the Sethupathy clan, which ruled the Ramnad Country from early 17th century till India&#39;s independence in 1947. In A.D. 1888, the king of Ramnad Bhaskara Sethupathy married Sivapakkiam Nachiar, the daughter of Kannusamy Thevar of Thooval, who was a relative of the King. When the present Prince of Ramand, Kasinatha Durai, also a former Member of the Parliament (Lok Sabha), visited the author in the 1990s, he confirmed that his grandmother was from Thooval.</p><br>
<p>The town of Zaghouan is located below on its northern slope. The mountain is the site of a Roman temple known as the Temple de Eaux  which marks the site of an aqueduct which used to take water to the city of Carthage over 100 km away.</p><br>
<h2>The summit route</h2><br>
<p>(5–8 hours, hard)</p><br>
<h3>The ascent</h3><br>
<p>Follow signs to the ‘Temple des Eaux’ through the town. Continue past the temple on a road winding up the mountain to higher regions. Keep driving along this steep road for just over 10 kilometres until you reach a big white building on your left (Sidi Bougabrine). From here you should be able to see the summit fairly clearly to the south-south-east.</p><br>
<p>Leading straight to the summit is a fairly steep ridge. Walk back along the road (from the building) for a kilometre until you are where the road intersects the ridge that is now to the south-east below a small rock face. There is also a parking space here but probably only big enough for 2 cars.</p><br>
<p>From this point, (36°21’54 N; 10°06’13 E) leave the road and head up south-east onto the ridge. There is no path and pushing through undergrowth may be tricky. Some scrambling will also be involved. Once having gained the ridge, it is a fairly straightforward scramble to the top. Just continue along the top of the ridge until you run out of mountain!</p><br>
<p>The route is arduous, and the terrain is very rocky or overgrown. Expect some tricky scrambling and exposure near the summit.</p><br>
<p>When you reach the top (under 3 hours for a group of fit people), you will see that there are actually two peaks, the further one is barely higher than the first, but is the true summit.</p><br>
<h3>The descent</h3><br>
<p>Drop southwest off the summit, following a large gulley, but staying on the western shoulder. This descent is particularly steep and frustrating, as the rocks are too large to scree glissade, while small enough to easily twist an ankle.</p><br>
<p>Keep going southwest down this shoulder until it starts flattening out, (36°21’03 N; 10°06’22 E) you then come across a series of old mining excavations. Some are deep shafts delving into the belly of the mountain. Please proceed with caution as these have not been used for a long time. Past the mine shafts where the shoulder widens out and flattens (dotted with a few trees), head southwest off the end of the shoulder (36°20’58 N; 10°06’11 E) below a buttress of rock and you should find an old mining track (keep a good eye out as this is not very visible).</p><br>
<p>Follow this track heading north along the southern flank of the ridge you ascended for over ½ a kilometre. Keep an eye out on the left for a drinking pool for livestock in the valley below. Leave the track and head down towards this.</p><br>
<p>Once there look northwest for another trail; follow it (passing some old mining buildings 500m from the pool: 36°21’30N; 10°06’04) until it starts running parallel to the road. Drop off the track onto the road or follow it further and pop out a few minutes later.</p><br>

<p>Setesdalsheiene is the collective term for the mountains to the west and east of the Setesdalen valley in Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder counties in Southern Norway. The river Otra flows through the valley between the mountains. This area is primarily located in the municipalities of Bykle, Valle, Bygland, Evje og Hornnes, Sirdal, Kvinesdal, and Åseral. The vast Hardangervidda plateau lies to the north and the Ryfylkeheiene mountains lie to the west.</p><br>
<p>The Setesdal Vesthei - Ryfylkeheiane Landscape Protection Area (The Norwegian version of a Zakaznik) covers 6,155 km&sup2; which includes the western parts of Setesdalsheiene. The 1,507 m tall mountain Sæbyggjenuten is the highest point in the Stesdalsheiene area, but few peaks are more than 1,300 m. The landscape is mostly rugged with moorland and exposed bedrock with many lakes surrounded by alpine flora. There are wild reindeer herds living in Setesdalsheiene.</p><br>
<p>The George W. Furbeck House is a house located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, United States. The house was designed by famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1897 and constructed for Chicago electrical contractor George W. Furbeck and his new bride Sue Allin Harrington. The homes interior is much as it appeared when the house was completed but the exterior has seen some alteration. The house is an important example of Frank Lloyd Wrights transitional period of the late 1890s which culminated with the birth of the first fully mature early modern Prairie style house. The Furbeck House was listed as a contributing property to a USA federal Registered Historic District in 1973 and declared a local Oak Park Landmark in 2002.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>George Furbecks father, Warren, purchased the future site of the George W. Furbeck House in 1892. Furbeck was working as an electrical contractor in Chicago at the time and maintained a residence with his parents. On April 9, 1897 the Oak Park Reporter announced that George Furbeck would be erecting a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home on the site his father had purchased five years earlier. The site of the Furbeck home provided George Furbeck with easy access to the Oak Park Avenue train station and thus, to his office in Chicago. On June 29, 1897, two weeks after ground was broken on his new home, Furbeck married Sue Allin Harrington of Michigan. The next day Warren Furbecks deed for the site of the George Furbeck House was transferred to his son. The George Furbeck House was completed in late 1897 or early 1898</p><br>
<p>The home&#39;s interior has seen very little alteration and is mostly intact as Wright originally envisioned it. The exterior underwent significant alteration in 1920 when the enclosed brick front porch was built on the retaining wall that surrounded the original, smaller, open porch. The third floor dormer was also extended as well.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The house was designed at the beginning of Wrights three-year period of experimentation that resulted in the fully mature Prairie house in the early 20th century with such projects as the Arthur Heurtley House and the Frank Thomas House, both in Oak Park. It combines elements from the traditional Queen Anne style and from Wrights own Prairie style, as such the home represents a transition by Wright toward early modern style.</p><br>
<p>The homes windows are wood with wooden frames and mostly casement style, most of the first floor windows are topped with plain gray limestone lintels. Some of the casement windows feature original art glass with simple geometric designs. The art glass, which is one of Wrights earliest completely original designs of the type, features three vertical lines with simple colored borders. Beneath the first and second floor windows a continuous stone sill course wraps around the house.</p><br>
<p>The front (east) elevation is framed by two octagonal towers and the entire structure is clad in a pink-colored brick. The building&#39;s hip roof features overhanging eaves, an element common to Prairie style architecture. The entire structure rests upon a stepped, limestone water table. The main feature of the front facade, besides the octagonal towers, is the 20 ft (6.10 m) X 20 ft, one-story sun porch projecting from the building. The sun porch has a low-pitched hip roof with an eave that projects over the front door, which is centered on the porch and flanked by two pairs of casement windows. Above the sun porch, on the second floor, is a pair of art glass doors which open onto a balcony between the two octagonal towers.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>The George Furbeck House is listed as a contributing property to the Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture Historic District. The historic district was added to the USA National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 1973.</p><br>
<p>As part of Wrights transitional decade of the 1890s the Furbeck House is significant as the beginning of a three-year period of experimentation by the architect which resulted in the first fully modern style residential buildings. The George Furbeck House connects Wrights early period, which included geometric Queen Anne houses such as the Robert P. Parker House, with his fully mature Prairie style which resulted in early modern homes such as the Heurtley House. Prominent features reminiscent of Wrights early work includes the octagon towers; a shape he was exploring throughout his transitional decade. The homes rectilinear massing, hip roof, casement windows and horizontal sill course all featured extensively in later Prairie style homes by Wright.</p><br>
<p>The Lemberg is a mountain located in the Tuttlingen district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.</p><br>
<p>The mountain is the highest point of the Swabian Jura (Schwäbische Alb). It is one of the It is one of the "Ten Thousanders"</p><br>
<p>—ten 1,000-metre-high summits of the region. On the peak of the mountain is a 30-m-high tower which, reaching above the surrounding trees, offers a beautiful prospect, in clear weather as far as the Alps.</p><br>
<h2>Prehistory</h2><br>
<p>Like many of the mountains of the Swabian Alps, Lemberg is a "Zeugenberg"—a "witness mountain". A stratum of limestone has generally eroded away, leaving a few more-resistant remnants, such as the Lemberg.</p><br>
<p>The name is Celtic in origin. Those Celtic prefix "lem-" means something like morass or sump. Probably this name derives from the source of the Bära river, a tributary of the Danube, at the foot of the mountain.</p><br>
<p>From the 8th to 5th centuries B.C. there was a Hallstatt settlement on the Lemberg. Even today walls and ditches of a fortification can be detected on the summit. In the east and the west the summit plateau was terraced. Further remains of Celtic activity are also on the neighboring mountains, and the whole Heuberg region.</p><br>
<h2>Lemberg tower</h2><br>
<p>By 1890 there were plans for the building of a wooden tower on the Lemberg or its neighbour, the Oberhohenberg (1,011 m). The historical significance and the comfortable ascent argued in favor of the Oberhohenberg, however finally—particularly because of status as the highest mountain of the Swabian Alps—the decision was made to build on the Lemberg. In 1894 the first terrain inspection was made by one engineer and two master craftsmen. However construction was delayed, in particular because of scarce funds. In 1897 the original plans were dropped; a discussion over the building of a tower from stone or iron began. Since the cost of a stone tower was estimated at 24,000 marks, a substantially cheaper building of iron was chosen. A company from Freiburg was assigned. The funds came predominantly from donations.</p><br>
<p>The foundations were laid in Easter week, 1899. On Whit Monday, twelve workers began with the construction of the tower. Good weather favoured the work, so that on 17 June 1899 the building was already finished. The tower ascent has over 152 stairway steps, on twelve open floors. The tower consists of 23 tons of iron. The cost estimate of 10,000 Marks was not exceeded. The observation platform of Lemberg Tower is 30 metres above ground. With the flag pole on its top the tower is 34 metres tall.</p><br>
<p>Since then, the tower has undergone refurbishing about every 25 years. Particularly after the First World War, during which the tower had also as in World War II no military importance, one played with the idea to demolish the tower in order to save the money for renovation. The suggestion did not find however sufficient proponents. The tower got in 1973 and 1999 closed for a longer time, in which it was refurbished by volunteered craftsmen from Gosheim.</p><br>
<p>In the middle of the 1980s the former telecommunication office at of Rottweil installed two directional antennas on Lember Tower for the realization of a passive repeater microwave link between the communications building in Rottweil and the trunk exchange, situated at station road in Gosheim. This microwave link, which would not have been possible on direct way, served as addition to the existing telephone interwirings. After these were replaced by optical waveguide cables, this microwave link became ever more dispensable and in the year 2005 these antennas were dismantled.</p><br>

<h2>Prospect</h2><br>
<p>On clear days the view reaches to the south as far as the Alps, whose northern edge can be seen from the Zugspitze to the Bernese Alps. To the west lies the Black Forest, whose highest points are to be recognized: Feldberg in the southwest and Hornisgrinde in the northwest. At closer hand, the northwestern escarpment of the Swabian Alps (the Albtrauf) up to the Hohenzollern castle is to be seen, in the north the upper Neckar valley, the Schönbuch natural park, and in very good conditions even the Stuttgart TV tower, about 90 km away. Days with good viewing are more frequent in the autumn and winter than in the spring and summer.</p><br>
<h2>Hiking access</h2><br>
<p>The Lemberg can be ascended on designated hiking trails. The Schwäbische Alb-Nordrand-Weg ("Swabian Alps northern edge way"), Hauptwanderweg 1 of the Swabian Alpine Club (Schwäbischen Albverein), crosses the summit. From the nearest parking lot, the summit can be attained in about three-quarters of an hour, gaining about 180 m in elevation.</p><br>
<p>From Wilflingen, the summit can be attained in approximately one and a half hours, climbing about 400 m. The trail crosses fields before entering the forest. The final climb of the trail is narrow and steep, gaining about 130 m.</p><br>
<h2>Summit shelter</h2><br>
<p>On the summit of the Lemberg, the Albverein maintains a hut; a German flag is flown from the tower on days when the hut is open.</p><br>
<p>The first protection hut was inaugurated on 21 June 1901. It had a surface area of 6 × 3.5 m² and was a blockhouse made from round timbers on a concrete foundation. The construction cost amounted to 800 marks.</p><br>
<p>Today&#39;s protection hut has a small guest room.</p><br>

<p>The province of Aigialeia (Επαρχία Αιγιαλείας) was one of the three provinces of Achaea. Its territory corresponded with that of the current municipality, except the municipal unit Erineos. It was abolished in 2006.</p><br>

<p>Present Aigialeia was the territory of the ancient Achaeans. Several towns of the Achaean League were located here: Rhypes, Aegium, Ceryneia, Boura, Helice, Aegae and Aigeira. Helice was submerged as a result an earthquake, which also destroyed Boura. In Roman times, the most important towns were Aegium and Aigeira. In the Middle Ages, the area was ruled by the Byzantines, Slavs, Franks, Venetians, and from the 16th century the Ottoman Turks. Aigialeia was liberated in the first stage of the Greek War of Independence, in 1821. Aigio was struck by an earthquake in 1995, damaging several buildings. <p>The Brindabella Valley is a valley situated below the western ridge-line of the Brindabella Range, located midway along the Goodradigbee River, in the south of New South Wales, Australia.</p><br>
<h2>Location and features</h2><br>
<p>The valley is framed by the Brindabella Range and the Fiery Mountain Range, most notably by Mount Bramina and Bulls Head in the north and Black Bottle Mountain and Mount Franklin in the south. The valley is largely gentle, undulating farmland rising from 620 m above sea level in the north to 700 m above sea level in the south. Most of the native vegetation in the valley has been removed in favour of pasture, fruit trees and other exotic species, however the surrounding mountains are largely national parks, populated entirely with native flora.</p><br>
<p>The traditional custodians of the area now known as the Brindabella Valley are the Ngunawal, Walgalu and Djimantan indigenous peoples. The valley was first settled by Europeans as a stock outstation for the Yarralumla station in the 1830s, with the first land grant made in 1849.</p><br>
<p>Access to the Brindabella Valley is via dirt roads from Canberra or Tumut. A private road runs through Long Plain toward Rules Point and, and access is rarely permitted. All roads are subject to frequent closures during heavy snow in winter.</p><br>
<p>The Goodbradigbee River is a popular trout fishing location for Canberra anglers and camp sites are provided on the east bank of the river within the valley. Much of the river is difficult to reach without crossing private property and anglers should be aware that certain landowners are unlikely to grant access. In 1968 the National Capital Development Commission considered daming the Brindabella Valley for the purpose of sending water from the Goodbradigbee River into the Cotter River via a tunnel. The plan was abandoned.</p><br>
<p>A notable feature of the valley are the transmission lines running from the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme to Canberra.</p><br>
<p>463 West Street is a 13 building complex located on the block between West Street, Washington Street, Bank Street, and Bethune Street in Manhattan, New York. It was originally the home of Bell Telephone Laboratories between 1898 and 1966. For a time, it was the largest industrial research center in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and further designated as a National Historic Landmark, as Bell Telephone Laboratories.</p><br>
<p>Many early technological inventions were developed here including automatic telephone panel and crossbar switches, the first experimental talking movies (1923), black and white and color TV, video telephones, radar, the vacuum tube, medical equipment, the development of the phonograph record and the first commercial broadcasts, including the first broadcast of a baseball game and the New York Philharmonic with Arturo Toscanini conducting. It also served as the headquarters for the company from 1925 to the early 1960s, after which the headquarters moved to Murray Hill, New Jersey.</p><br>
<p>The site was also the home for part of the Manhattan Project during World War II. Shortly after the war, the transistor was invented here.</p><br>
<p>After two years of renovations by Richard Meier, the building was reopened in 1970 as Westbeth Artists Community for low to middle income artists. In addition to affordable artist housing, the complex contains a theatre, an art gallery, and a synagogue.</p><br>
<p>It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1975. The complex was listed a second time on the National Register in 2009, for its high-profile and successful example of adaptive reuse of the property.</p><br>
<p>The Kitchen, Montross & Wilcox Store at 85 Leonard Street between Broadway and Church Street in the TriBeCa neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was built in 1861 in the Italianate style for a company which dealt in dry goods. The cast iron for the buildings facade came from James Bogardus ironworks, one of the few surviving buildings for which that is the case. The building&#39;s columns are referred to as "sperm-candle style" from their resemblance to candles made from spermaceti.</p><br>
<p>The design combines classically-inspired elements with the non-classical emphasis on lightness,</p><br>
<p>openness, and verticality which characterizes cast-iron architecture.</p><br>
<p>The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1974, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is located within the Tribeca East Historic District.</p><br>
<p>The Georgetown Steam Plant, now the Georgetown PowerPlant Museum, located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, constructed in 1906 for the Seattle Electric Company, provided power for Seattle, notably for streetcars.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The plant was originally built by Stone and Webster in 1906. One of the first reinforced concrete structures on the USA West Coast, it originally provided power for the Interurban Railway between Seattle and Tacoma; it also provided both direct current for Seattle&#39;s streetcars and alternating current for Georgetown, then an independent city. They purchased General Electric steam turbine technology, based on patents originally held by inventor Charles Gordon Curtis. At the time, this was cutting edge technology, and the Georgetown Steam Plant "marks the beginning of the end of the reciprocating steam engine" as the dominant mode of generating electricity on a large scale.</p><br>
<p>Originally located along an oxbow of the Duwamish River to provide cooling water, the plant was left inland after the original river channel was straightened in 1917. Retired after nearly 75 years of operation, it remains "surprisingly complete and operable". The plant has three Curtis turbines, manufactured by the General Electric Company between 1906 and 1917.</p><br>
<p>Puget Sound Traction and Lighting Company (now Puget Sound Energy) bought the Seattle Electric Company in 1912; the Georgetown Steam Plant powered the Seattle-to-Tacoma Interurban and Seattle streetcars; it also provided residential and industrial power to Georgetown. Originally an oil-fired plant, it converted to a coal in 1917.</p><br>
<h2>Landmark and museum</h2><br>
<p>The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1984, The building itself, "built by a fast-track construction process, was designed and supervised by Frank W. Gilbreth, later a nationally famous proponent of efficiency engineering." The building is also a Seattle City Landmark and is on the Washington State Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>Paul Carosino and Lilly Tellefson founded the Georgetown PowerPlant Museum to restore, maintain and operate the plant. The group was officially founded April 25, 1995. Carosino and Tellefson initially served as joint executive directors; Tellefson took over the role after Carosino&#39;s death in 1996.</p><br>
<p>The plant remains owned by Seattle City Light, the city&#39;s public electric utility; they lease it to the museum. The museum operates an accredited School of Technology; it opens to the general public from 10am to 2pm on the second Saturday of each month. In the past it has hosted hobbyist "steam meets". Simultaneously with the steam meets, the Puget Sound Garden Railroad Society operated a miniature steam railroad on the grounds. The May steam meet was a picnic, with numerous temporary exhibits.</p><br>
<p>The plant houses the last operable examples of early vertical steam generating turbines, as well as reciprocating steam engines, which are also operational, a collection of vintage machining tools, and several smaller steam engines.</p><br>
<p>The plant was the site of the last performance of the rock band Big Black.</p><br>
<p>Mount Sabyinyo  is an extinct volcano in eastern Africa in the Virunga Mountains. It is north-east of Lake Kivu, one of the African Great Lakes, and west of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. The summit of the mountain, at 3,645 m, marks the intersection of the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Rwanda, and Uganda. It also is within the adjoining national parks established by these countries: Virunga National Park in the DRC, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.</p><br>
<p>The slopes of Mt. Sabyinyo are a habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The mountain carries the local nickname "Old Man&#39;s Teeth" because its serrated summit resembles worn teeth in a gum line (in contrast to the perfect conical summits of the adjacent mountains in this range).</p><br>
<p>The Rosenberg Brothers Department Store building is located in downtown Albany, Georgia, USA. The three-story brick structure was built in 1924 in an Italianate/Neo-Renaissance Classical Revival style by J.C. Hind and J. T. Murphy.</p><br>
<p>Jacob Rosenberg was a Jewish merchant who leased a store at this prominent corner lot in 1896. The site was owned by the Tift family, who founded Albany. Rosenberg had a new department store building constructed on the site in 1923 in a Second Renaissance Revival architecture style. It continued in business until 1978 when a second Rosenberg&#39;s location opened within the, then new, Albany Mall in 1976. Gray Communications bought and renovated the building in 1985 to house the Albany Herald.</p><br>
<p>Fares  is a village in the municipal unit of Farres, Achaea, Greek. It is located on the left bank of the river Peiros, 2 km southeast of Isoma and 17 km south of Patras. In 2011 Fares had a population of 466 for the village and 519 for the community, which includes the village Prevedos. Prevedos is on the Greek National Road 33 .</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Fares is named after the ancient town Pharae, which might be named after the Greek mythological figure Pharis, son of Hermes and the Danaid Philodameia. Pharae was located 150 stadia (28 km) from Patras and 70 stadia (13 km) from the sea, and was built by the banks of the river Peiros. It was part of the Achaean Dynasty and later the Achaean League.</p><br>
<h2>Population</h2><br>
<p>Mount Ellen is a mountain located in Garfield County, Utah. The high point of Mount Ellen&#39;s North Summit Ridge is the highest point in the Henry Mountains; it is also the highest point in Garfield County. It can be reached by a short hike from an unpaved road. These mountains were the last to be surveyed by the USGS in the lower 48 states. The mountain can be seen from as far as Mount Peale in the La Sal Mountains of eastern Utah.</p><br>
<p>Mount Ellen is an ultra prominent peak, meaning that it has more than 1,500 m of topographic prominence, standing out considerably from nearby mountains. It stands in the watershed of the Fremont River, which together with Muddy Creek forms the Dirty Devil River, which drains into the Colorado River, and ultimately into the Gulf of California in Mexico.</p><br>
<p>The Paiute name for Mount Ellen was Un tar re. It was also referred to as First Mountain. After climbing to the summit in June 1872, Almon Harris Thompson named it for his wife Ellen. Ellen Powell Thompson was also the sister of explorer John Wesley Powell.</p><br>
<p>Pasochoa  is an extinct volcano located in the Guayllabamba river basin in the Ecuadorian Andes. The current mountain form is a collapsed crater with a semicircular shape. This structure emerged approximately 100 thousand years ago due to an eruption which destroyed the crater and occidental slope of the previous volcanic cone.</p><br>
<p>Lava and ash increased the fertility of the ground in the Pasochoa region, encouraging the growth of a vibrant forest ecosystem. Despite the fertile soil, difficult accessibility and an uneven surface made the area inappropriate for extensive agriculture. The Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge, established in 1996, contains one of the few remaining original Andean forests. Fundacion Natura used to manage the Pasochoa and offer programs on the natural resource conservation and environmental education and sponsors scientific research. Recently, the mountain&#39;s management has passed to the hands of the Ministerio del Ambiente. The mountain has a wonderful variety of wildlife, including pumas, foxes, skunks, a very diverse collection of birds, and a wonderful collection of plants.</p><br>
<p>Today the volcano is well known as a travel destination.</p><br>
<p>Alexandra Land  is a large island located in Franz Josef Land, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russian Federation. Not counting detached and far-lying Victoria Island, it is the westernmost island of the Franz Josef Archipelago.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The highest point of the island, 382 m, is the summit of Kupol Lunny (Купол Лунный) "Dome of the Moon", a large ice dome covering most of the western part of the island. At the western end of the western glaciated area lies the Nordenskiöld Glacier; other glaciers in the island are the Worcester Glacier (HMS Worcester Glacier) and the Payer Glacier. The northern part of the island is unglacierized and its eastern end forms a peninsula stretching southwards, the Polyarnykh Letchikov Peninsula. This peninsula is covered by Kupol Kropotkina (Купол Кропоткина), a smaller ice dome. There are three large lakes on the island, including the Utinoye Lake (Duck Lake) and the Ledyanoye Lake (Ice Lake).</p><br>
<p>Dezhnev Bay (Zaliv Dezhneva) lies between the western part of the island and the Polyarnykh Letchikov Peninsula. Cape Thomas (Mys Tomasa) is the southernmost headland of the peninsula. Cambridge Channel (Proliv Kambritch) is a wide sound between Alexandra Land and Zemlya Georga.</p><br>
<p>At the southern end this island has two capes pointing southwestwards in its southernmost coast: Cape Lofley and Cape Ludlow. Cape Mary Harmsworth, the cape pointing westwards is the westernmost point of the Franz Josef Archipelago proper.</p><br>
<h2>History and ecology</h2><br>
<p>Alexandra Land is named in honor of Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna of Russia (1783–1801), who became Archduchess of Austria upon her marriage to Archduke Joseph of Austria, Palatine of Hungary. Alexandra Land is also home to Nagurskoye military base, Russia&#39;s northernmost military base.</p><br>
<p>Russian navigator Valerian Albanov of the Svyataya Anna reached Cape Mary Harmsworth in Alexandra Land in 1914 after his ordeal on the polar ice. Cape Mary Harmsworth was named after Alfred Harmsworth&#39;s wife Mary. Alfred Harmsworth, fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, was the main sponsor of the 1894 Jackson-Harmsworth Polar Expedition to Franz Josef Land.</p><br>
<p>The polar bear, Ursus maritimus, is found on Alexandra Land. The polar bear population in this region, as in other Arctic sub-regions, is genetically distinct from other polar bear sub-populations in differing Arctic sub-regions.</p><br>
<p>During World War II the Germans established an ill-fated meteorological station on the island, called Schatzgräber ("Treasure Hunter"). Most of the members were stricken with trichinosis after eating raw polar bear meat. The survivors were removed and the project abandoned.</p><br>
<p>Nagurskoye is a Russian base located on the island at 80&deg;49&prime;N latitude, 47&deg;25&prime;E longitude, on the site of the former meteorological station. It was named after pioneer pilot Jan Nagórski and has served as one of the most important meteorological stations in the archipelago during the Cold War. This base has a 1,500 m snow runway. An Antonov An-72 cargo aircraft crashed while landing at Nagurskoye on 23 December 1996.</p><br>
<p>Adams Glacier is situated on the northwest flank of Mount Adams, a 12,281 ft stratovolcano in the USA state of Washington. Much of it becomes the source of Adams Creek, a tributary of the Cispus River. It is the largest glacier on Mount Adams, and the second largest in the contiguous United States, flowing down from the summit ice cap at over 12,000 ft for over 2.5 mi to a terminus near 7,000 ft.</p><br>
<p>Between 11,800 and, the glacier flows through a steep icefall that provides challenging climbing through a maze of seracs. The first ascent of the glacier was by Fred Beckey, Dave Lind, and Robert Mulhall in July 1945.</p><br>
<p>Below 8,400 ft, the glacier spreads into a broad sheet with five separate tongues of ice extending out to termini between large moraines. On its easternmost tongue, it ends at a glacial tarn, or small ice-choked lake above High Camp.</p><br>
<p>The glacier has decreased in surface area by 47% between 1904 and 2006.</p><br>
<p>In 1901, when Mount Adams was being mapped and its glaciers named by Harry Fielding Reid, Reid&#39;s companion and guide, Claude Ewing Rusk, wanted to name the glacier Reid Glacier in honor of Reid; however, Reid insisted that it should be named something else because he thought it improper to place his own name on the map that he was making and the Mazamas were trying to name a glacier on Mount Hood after him. This eventually persuaded Rusk and he conceded to name the glacier Adams Glacier.</p><br>
<p>The Deerwood Auditorium is a community center in Deerwood, Minnesota, United States, built as a Works Progress Administration project. The auditorium, built in 1935, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a rare surviving example of federal relief architecture in Minnesota.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Town officials had been discussing building a community hall in 1933, but during the Great Depression, the town was strapped for cash. A local resident, Beriah Magoffin, donated two lots for the building, but there was still a need for cash to actually build the structure. Meanwhile, Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal programs not only provided employment and economic relief, but also built lasting infrastructure improvements. The town first received funding for the auditorium in 1935 through the State Emergency Relief Administration, but the SERAs function was later subsumed by the Works Progress Administration.</p><br>
<p>The auditorium was designed by Carl H. Buetow, who had worked for a while under Clarence H. Johnston, Sr., a notable civic architect in Minnesota. Many local materials were used in an effort to save on costs. In particular, local men collected nearly 800 tons of fieldstone for the facing of the building. Some material, such as brick, was salvaged from the old Meacham Mine building. Despite shortages of money during the construction, the building was substantially completed in time for its first event, a lutefisk supper held on October 29, 1936. Final touches were completed in early 1937. The interior of the building contains a basketball court and auditorium, with a stage on the north end. The second floor of the building contained a balcony on each side of the court, while the first floor also housed the kitchen, library, locker rooms, and a city council room. The rear of the building housed the town&#39;s fire station.</p><br>
<p>The building has hosted events such as lectures, company meetings, exhibits, fraternal gatherings, graduations, and awards banquets, as well as several annual lutefisk dinners.</p><br>
<p>The Lick Skillet Railroad Work Station Historic District is a historic district in Brinkley, Arkansas that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.</p><br>
<p>It includes the former Brinkley Union Station located at the site of the former crossing of the Rock Island and Cotton Belt railroads in Brinkley, Monroe County in eastern Arkansas. In addition to the Rock Island and Cotton Belt, the station also served branchline trains of the Missouri Pacific.</p><br>

<p>Brinkley&#39;s Union Station was constructed in 1912 as a joint station to be utilized by all railroads passing through Brinkley. Cotton Belt passenger train service through Brinkley ended in 1959 and the last Rock Island passenger train stopped at Brinkley on November 10, 1967. Rock Island trackage west from Brinkley to near Little Rock was abandoned and dismantled in the mid-1980s.</p><br>

<h2>Central Delta Depot Museum</h2><br>
<p>After sitting abandoned for a number of years, Brinkley Union Station has now been restored and is operated as the Central Delta Depot Museum, a local history museum run by the Central Delta Historical Society. Exhibits focus on the natural, social, agricultural, and cultural history of the Arkansas Delta region. Displays include railroad artifacts, mussel diving, jazz musician Louis Jordan, military artifacts, wildlife displays, household artifacts and local history. The grounds include a train depot originally located in Monroe, Arkansas, a sharecropper’s house, and a Southern Pacific Railroad caboose.</p><br>
<p>The William H. Copeland House is a home located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, United States. In 1909 the home underwent a remodeling designed by famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The original, Italianate home was built in the 1870s. Dr. William H. Copeland commissioned Wright for the remodel and Wright&#39;s original vision of the project proposed a three-story Prairie house. That version was rejected and the result was the more subdued, less severely Prairie, William H. Copeland House. On the exterior the most significant alteration by Wright was the addition of a low-pitched hip roof. The house has been listed as a contributing property to a USA Registered Historic District since 1973.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The William Copeland House was first constructed around 1873 for William H. Harman. The large, Italianate home represented a microcosm of the general character of homes in Oak Park before Wright began designing buildings. Homes of this style, "classically tinged" and "robust," dotted the landscape of small towns across the United States. It was the second commission for Wright from Copeland; in 1908 the architect had designed a garage for Copeland at the residence.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The Copeland House was designed around 1873 by an unknown architect and cast in the Italianate style. Wrights 1909 remodel work included exterior and interior alterations. A new tile roof was added above the decorative brick work; the roof was removed in the 1950s because of its maintenance expenses. The work fused Wrights Prairie style with the traditional Italiante style through the buildings exterior lines. The new low-pitched hip roof that Wright designed, along with the wrap-around porch and overhanging eaves are all elements found in the Copeland House which can be found on other Prairie style homes Wright designed. The remodeling work also replaced the original doors with doors, frame, sidelights and a transom window all of Wrights own design.</p><br>
<p>Wright&#39;s original plan called for the Copeland House to be remodeled into a three-story Prairie house but that plan was rejected. The result was that the Wright-designed remodel was not as ambitious as it had been planned to be originally. Of the exterior work Wright designed, the new roof was the most substantial. In addition to the expansive exterior work Wright remodeled the main rooms on the ground floor to adhere to his Prairie style. Also inside he designed the dining room sideboard, table and chairs.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>The Copeland House is an example of Wrights remodeling design work. It is listed as a contributing property to the Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture Historic District. The historic district joined the USA National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Wright also added a large brick fireplace to the library. However, as was so often the, (as evidenced by the sagging cantilevers at Falling Water and the sagging second floor of the Heurtley House) Wrights use of available materials exceeded their structural capacity. The mantle of the fireplace is a large stone that cracked under the weight of the bricks, as did steps in the front stairway. The center wall of the coach house also sank due to inadequacy of the center foundation.</p><br>
<p>Longridge Fell is the most southerly fell in England, near the town of Longridge, Lancashire. It lies at the southern end of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As its name suggests, it takes the form of a long ridge which rises in a north-easterly direction from within the town of Longridge to its summit 4.5 miles distant. As the ridge curves towards the east, it comes to a sudden end and drops into the Hodder Valley. The fell is a good example of a cuesta; the ridge has a sharp drop or escarpment on its northern side, and a gentler, more varying slope on its southern side. These features make it a popular takeoff for hang-gliders and paragliders on the relatively infrequent occurrences of a northerly wind.</p><br>
<p>From the fell&#39;s 1,148-ft (350-m) summit, views are afforded of Preston to the south-west; the Fylde Coast to the west; the outstanding view of the Vale of Chipping and the fells of the Forest of Bowland to the north and west (including Parlick, Fair Snape Fell and Beacon Fell); the Yorkshire Dales to the north-east (including, most notably, Pen-y-ghent); Clitheroe, Pendle Hill and Whalley, to the east and south-east; and Winter Hill and the West Pennine Moors and the huge British Aerospace factory at Samlesbury Aerodrome. On clear days, the Lake District and sometimes the Isle of Man can be seen to the north-west, and the Snowdonia mountain range to the south-west.</p><br>
<p>The River Hodder, and its tributary the River Loud, flow eastward along the north side of the fell, before turning south at the end of the fell to join the River Ribble which runs westward along the south of the fell. Cowley Brook, a tributary of Stydd Brook, begins its course near the fell. The village of Hurst Green and the adjoining Stonyhurst College lie on the south side of the fell.</p><br>
<p>Longridge town lies at the south-west end of the fell. There were once extensive stone quarries at Tootle Heights, now mostly built on apart from a deep rocky water-filled remnant off the Tan Yard bridlepath, and the reservoirs. The Dilworth Upper Reservoir between the roads where Forty Acre Lane branches off Higher Road, leading from Longridge up the fell. Forty Acre Lane leads towards Jeffrey Hill, the name for a small part of the western section of Longridge fell, via Longridge Golf Course, whose clubhouse doubles as the home of the Preston Wheelers Cycling Club. Below Tootle Heights are the Spade Mill Reservoirs.</p><br>
<p>Lytham Hall is an 18th-century Georgian country house in Lytham, Lancashire, a mile from the centre of the town in 78 acres of wooded parkland. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The manor of Lytham was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Lidun. In the 12th century it was given to the Benedictine monks of Durham Priory for the foundation of a monastic cell—Lytham Priory. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, Lytham Priory came into the possession of Sir Richard Molyneux. In 1606 the land was acquired by local landowner Cuthbert Clifton who built a house there. Cuthbert&#39;s descendant, Thomas Clifton, replaced that house with the current hall, which was built 1757–1764 to the design of John Carr of York. For the next two centuries the Clifton estate, at its largest, comprised 8,000 acres.</p><br>
<p>Ownership of the property descended to John Clifton (1764–1832) and thence to his son Thomas Joseph Clifton (1788–1851), who extensively remodelled the estate by extending the surrounding parkland. It passed via Colonel John Talbot Clifton (1819–1882), MP for North Lancashire, to his 14-year-old grandson, the colourful John Talbot Clifton (1868–1928), during whose stewardship the railway was built along the estates southern boundary and part of the land sold for housing. During the First World War the house was used as a military hospital and after the Cliftons had moved to live in Ireland in 1919 and then Scotland in 1922 the house was somewhat neglected. Clifton was a passionate traveller and died in 1928 on an expedition to Timbuktu with his wife, Violet Beauclerk. She later wrote a biography of her husband, published under the title The Book of Talbot, which won the 1933 James Tait Black Prize, and was the last person to live in the house. Their dilettante film producer son, Henry de Vere Clifton, had squandered much of the familys wealth and the house had to be sold to Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance in 1963 for office accommodation.</p><br>
<p>On 1 December 1965, Lytham Hall was designated as a Grade I listed building. The Grade I designation is the highest of the three grades. The hall is on the Heritage at Risk Register because its condition is considered to be only "fair".</p><br>
<p>In 1997 Lytham Town Trust bought the building, with help from a donation from BAE Systems, and subsequently leased it to Heritage Trust for the North West for 99 years.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Lytham Hall is constructed in the Palladian style of red brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and stuccoed features. It has three storeys on a rectangular, symmetrical plan and sits on a stone plinth. The front façade lies to the east; it has a central bay that extends slightly forward and has an Ionic pediment. The main entrance is also pedimented and is flanked by Doric columns. There are four pilasters between the first floor and roof cornice. The ground floor window have Gibbs surrounds.</p><br>
<p>In contrast to traditional Palladian-style houses in which the servants and utility rooms were on the ground floor (piano rustico) and the important family rooms were on the first floor (piano nobile), Lytham Halls main rooms are on the ground floor.</p><br>
<p>In the grounds are several Grade II listed structures, including the Gatehouse, a large stable block, a large dovecote, the inner gates, a statue of Diana in what used to be a formal garden, and a screen wall running south from the west wing.</p><br>
<p>The Notre Dame Academy and Convent is located at 3501 State Street in the Florence neighborhood on the north end of Omaha, Nebraska. It is significant for its ethnic association with the Czech population in Nebraska as the only school and convent of the Czechoslovakian School Sisters de Notre Dame  in the United States. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The groups were home to a high school for girls from 1925 through 1974.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The 1880s and 90s saw nearly 100,000 Czechs leave the regions of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia and emigrate to the United States. Once in the United States the immigrants tended to establish Czech-only neighborhoods and towns that were almost self-sufficient, with Czech-language shops, banks, churches and schools. The Czechoslovakian School Sisters of Notre Dame came to the United States to sustain Czech immigrants by teaching the Czech language and culture.</p><br>
<p>The order purchased Seven Oaks Farm, Father Edward J. Flanagan&#39;s original site for Boys Town. Afterwards, Sisters were regular staff at Boys Town.</p><br>
<h3>Design</h3><br>
<p>Influenced by the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition, Omaha architects Matthew Lahr and Carl Stangel designed the E-shaped convent and school in 1924. It was constructed in phases over the next twenty-six years, all complying with the original design. It was designed in the late Italian Renaissance Revival style.</p><br>
<h3>School</h3><br>
<p>Notre Dame Academy was sponsored and staffed by the Notre Dame Sisters from 1926 through its merger with Rummel High School to form the present Roncalli Catholic High School in 1974.</p><br>
<h2>Present</h2><br>
<p>In 1997 the Sisters of Notre Dame changed the usage of the property, re-opening it as "Seven Oaks of Florence". The facility provides low-income housing for seniors subsidized by the USA Department of Housing and Urban Development.</p><br>
<p>Hainich is a forested hill chain in the state of Thuringia in Germany, between the towns of Eisenach, Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza. Hainich covers an area of around 160 km² , of which, since 31 December 1997, half has been designated as Hainich National Park. The highest point in Hainich is Alte Berg at 1621 ft . The Mühlhäuser Stadtwald in the northern part of Hainich is the largest municipal forest in Thuringia. The landmark of Hainich is Betteleiche, a 600-year-old common oak at Ihlefeld.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Hainich is 18,6 mls (30 km) long from north to south and 2,5 to 5 mls (4 to 8 km) broad from west to east. The western edge of Hainich leads to Lempertsbach and Lauterbach valley and is steeper than the eastern slope. In the northwest you can find high rocks like Sommerstein and Winterstein. The reason for the steeper slopes in western Hainich is the Saalfeld-Gotha-Eichenberg fault. Because of limestone the Hainich creeks are dry for the most time of the year. In the east of Hainich water rises up in strong sources like Kainspring or Popperöder Quelle. So Hainich is a karst region.</p><br>

<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>The annual average precipitation at Hainich ridge is as 31.5 in (800 mm). The average temperature is 43,7 °F (6,5 °C). The lower parts in the east are drier and warmer. The next commercial weather station is near Weberstedt.</p><br>
<h2>Ecology</h2><br>
<p>Hainich contains the largest coherent area of deciduous trees in Germany. The main trees are beech, mixed with ash, maple, tilia cordata, hornbeam and chequer tree (Sorbus torminalis).</p><br>
<p>Hainich is also known as an important habitat for wildcat (Felis silvestris). Central parts of Hainich National Park, so Weberstedt and Schöndorf forest, are rich on dead wood. That&#39;s the reason for the incidence of 522 beetles with their habitat only in wood. Biologists found from 1992 to 2008 altogether 2080 of different beetles in Hainich National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Forestry</h2><br>
<p>The north of Hainich is managed by the forestry service in Creuzburg. The forests belong to the municipality of Mühlhausen and to the cooperatives of Oberdorla, Niederdorla, Langula and Kammerforst. Selective tree cutting and uneven-aged management are dominant in the beech forests. Sycamore maple and Chequer tree are bringing the best yield. In former times oaks and hornbeam were favorised.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>A traditional trail is Rennstieg. It is 19,5 mls (31,3 km) long and leads from Eigenrieden in the north to Behringen in the south across Hainich.</p><br>
<p>On 26 August 2005 nearby Thiemsburg forester&#39;s house in the southeast of Hainich one of the largest tree canopy paths was declared to be open. It is the most important institution for environmental education in Thuringia and a platform for ecological research in the treetop region of a broadleaf forest. An attraction in Mühlhäuser Stadtwald are the Redwood trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum) from 1884. They are the largest ones in Thuringia. A trail from Weißes Haus on the eastern edge of Hainich leads to this site. Another curious tree, also in Mühlhäuser Stadtwald, is Corpusbuche a 400-year-old hornbeam.</p><br>
<p>The John Tears Inn is located along Goshen Turnpike between the hamlets of Circleville and Scotchtown in the Orange County, New York, town of Wallkill. It was built approximately 1790 and provided a stopover for travelers on the Goshen Turnpike due to its location midway between Bloomingburg and Goshen.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Tears, the son of an early German settler of the region, bought the inn property in 1793 from a New York merchant named John Taylor. The deed mentions a house and outbuilding already on the land.</p><br>
<p>He continued to add to the property, eventually building it up to its present size of 20 acre. In 1824 his father died, and Tears got a tavern license and likely built the Federal style addition on the house at that time. A finely crafted Adam style entrance, wood molding and faux marble fireplaces indicate that the inn was doing rather well. Many of the structures later built for the farm are still standing on the property</p><br>
<p>Upon Tears death in 1840, he left the inn to his sons Charles and Andrew with the stipulation that his wife be granted tenancy for life and she receive an ample firewood supply. Charles sold his interest in the property to a John McWilliams in 1844, and the latter family took the business over completely when Andrew died six years later. McWilliams widow in turn sold the building to Clarkson Bird in 1894, beginning a succession of owners that ended in 1936 with the Trimmer family leasing the land. They would buy it outright in 1950. Today Leona Trimmer lives in the house and runs an antique store in the barn.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and is currently the only property in the town so listed. In 2006 the property was threatened when a developer proposed to use an abandoned town road through part of the land in order to reach a proposed housing development, but so far that has not come to pass.</p><br>
<p>Mitsikeli  is a mountain range in the central part of the Pindus mountains, in Epirus, Greece. The mountain is located northeast of Ioannina and Lake Ioannina. Its highest elevation is 1,810 m. It stretches from near Kalpaki in the northwest to the eastern end of Lake Ioannina, a total length of 35 km. The northeastern slopes and the lower northwestern part of Mitsikeli are forested. The nearest mountains are the Tymfi to the north, the Lygkos to the northeast and the Lakmos to the east. It is drained by tributaries of the Thyamis to the northwest, towards Lake Ioannina to the southwest, by the Voidomatis  to the northeast and by the Arachthos to the southeast.</p><br>
<p>Mitsikeli forms the southwestern border of the Zagori region. Villages in the mountains include Kato Pedina and Asprangeloi in the northwest, Dikorfo and Perivleptos in the central part, and Kryovrysi in the southeast. The Greek National Road 6 (Larissa - Trikala - Ioannina - Igoumenitsa) passes south of the mountain, the Greek National Road 20 (Kozani - Konitsa - Ioannina) is to the west. The famous Perama Cave is to the southwest. There is a telecommunications tower on the summit.</p><br>
<p>Gramos  is a mountain range on the border of Albania and Greece. The mountain is part of the northern Pindus mountain range. Its highest peak, at the border of Albania and Greece, is 2,520 m. The region is inhabited by Albanians, Aromanians and Greeks.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Gramos is situated on the borders of the Kolonjë district of Albania and the Ioannina and Kastoria regional units of Greece. Three ridges join at its highest peak, running towards the north, southwest and east. The Gramos is drained towards the west by the river Osum, towards the northwest by the Devoll, towards the northeast by the Aliakmonas and towards the south by the Sarantaporos. The Gramos is very sparsely populated, the only sizable town being Ersekë (Albania) at its western foot. Other villages in the mountains are Gramos (northeast), Aetomilitsa (southeast), Starje (west) and Plikati (south). Nearby mountain ranges are the Smolikas to the south, Voio to the east and Ostrovicë to the northwest.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The mountain was a major communist stronghold in the Greek Civil War. Napalm B was also used during the Greek Civil War between the Greek Army and Communist rebels. During the last year of this Civil War, 1949, the United States increased its military aid to the Greek Government by introducing a new weapon to finish off the war: napalm B. (See also: greek fire) The first napalm attack in Greece took place on the mountain of Grammos, which was the stronghold of the Communist rebels. The provisional democratic government (i.e. the communist government) had its headquarters in the vicinity. It fell to the national government only in 1949, bringing the near conclusion of the Greek Civil war since after its fall only isolated pockets were left in communist control. The mountain still has live minefields from the civil war despite decades of demining and access to parts of the mountain is perilous.</p><br>
<p>The Starks Building is a landmark 14-story building on Fourth Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard in Downtown Louisville, Kentucky, USA. It was built in 1913 on a site that had been the First Christian Church of Louisville. It was commissioned by local businessman John Starks Rodes and designed by the Daniel Burnham firm of Chicago. It is 202 ft tall . It was listed as the 11th largest office complex in Louisville in 2004 by the newspaper Business First.</p><br>
<p>It was built in the Chicago School of architecture with Beaux Arts details. Cream-colored bricks are one of its signature features. It is decorated with classical motifs, including acanthus leaves, lion&#39;s heads and urns. It was originally a "U" shaped structure, but a 1926 addition designed by the firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White added a new wing to create a rectangular shape with a central sunlight well. At the bottom of the central atrium was a courtyard, and until 1984 it was covered with a Plexiglas skylight.</p><br>
<p>In 1953, the building was renovated to add a parking garage - the first in the city - to the building. The 700+ space garage was built on an adjoining lot and fronts Third Street. The Starks Building is mixed use, with retail, dining and office space. When it was sold in 1997 the building included about 350,000 ft&sup2; of leasable space. In the 1990s and 2000s the owners had trouble finding tenants, with over half of the space vacant in 2006.</p><br>
<p>Notable long-time tenants include the Colonnade Cafeteria, Seng Jewelers and Rodes Mens and Womens Clothing. Current tenants include the Business First of Louisville news publication, FoodCare, a startup that relocated its headquarters to Louisville from San Francisco in April 2012, and Mediaura, a highly successful digital agency. Colonnade Cafeteria moved into the Starks Building basement in 1926 and remained until 2006. Rodes Clothing, founded by the building&#39;s financier John Starks Rodes himself, was located in the building from 1914 until the company relocated to the suburbs in 2004.</p><br>
<p>It was owned by the Starks family until the mid-1980s when it was sold to an investment group, which resold the building in 1997 to Empire State Collateral. Empire State defaulted on the mortgage and ownership was taken over by Allstate in 2004. The building was sold again in 2006 to the. The Starks Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It is connected by a skyway to Fourth Street Live!, an entertainment mall adjacent on the North side. On July 2, 2007, the Cordish Company, developers of Fourth Street Live!, announced that it would expand the mall southward by leasing the first floor (street-level) of the Starks Building.</p><br>
<p>The Baltimore-based developer has since abandoned plans to develop 20,000 ft&sup2; of vacant street-level space in the Starks Building.</p><br>
<p>Since the purchase in 2006, occupancy has risen to 71 percent, as of May 2010, Hertz Investment Group said. The Starks building signed a number of new tenants during 2009, including an 11,500 ft&sup2; Eddie Merlots restaurant, part of a Fort Wayne, Ind.-based upscale steakhouse chain. With Eddie Merlots, all the Starks street-level space has been leased.</p><br>
<p>Thaw Hall is a historic academic building on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh that is a contributing property to the Schenley Farms National Historic District and has been named a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark. The five story building of stone, brick, and terra cotta was completed in 1910 in the Neoclassical Beaux-Arts style by architect Henry Hornbostel and today serves as space for a variety of academic classrooms, labs, offices, and centers. It is located between, and connected to, the universitys Old Engineering Hall and Space Research Coordination Center  along OHara Street in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.</p><br>
<h2>History and use</h2><br>
<p>The design for Thaw Hall came from Henry Hornbostels winning submission, termed the "Acropolis Plan", for a 1907 national competition to design a new campus for the University of Pittsburgh which was moving from its Observatory Hill campus to its current location in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Hornbostels plan was begun in 1908 with the construction of the now demolished School of Mines, later renamed State Hall. State Halls construction was closely followed by the laying of the cornerstone for what was originally termed the Engineering Building in 1909. Construction on the Engineering Building was completed in 1910, and its dedication took place on June 15 of that year, at which time it was renamed in honor of Pitt trustee and benefactor Benjamin Thaw, Sr., who donated a substantial amount toward the buildings construction. Only a few other buildings in the Acropolis Plan design were constructed, including the original Pennsylvania Hall in 1911 as well as the Mineral Industries Building in 1912. However, Thaw Hall is the only surviving building of Hornbostels original concept, as well as the oldest building on Pitts Oakland campus that was originally constructed for academic purposes.</p><br>
<p>Originally home to Pitts School of Engineering, it is now the secondary home to its Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the location of the Physics departments Resource Room, a student help center. Several other departments, including Asian Languages, Chemistry, and Archaeology, have offices, classrooms, and labs in various locations throughout the building. It additionally is the home of the Architectural Studies Program&#39;s "architecture lab" which, following its dedication in the spring of 2007, serves as a dedicated design studio space that accommodates a two-semester architectural studio sequence that facilitates intensive instruction from practicing architects in the fundamentals of spatial thinking, graphic representation techniques, and model building. The Office of Experiential Learning, Freshman Programs, and the Writing Center were all previously located in this building.</p><br>
<p>Renovations, upgrades, and improvements for Thaw Hall, Old Engineering Hall, and Allen Hall have been announced and are preliminarily targeted in to be in excess of $58.6 million according to the University&#39;s 12-year facilities master plan.</p><br>
<h2>Architectural elements</h2><br>
<p>According to architectural historian Christopher Drew Armstrong, the five story stone, brick, and terra cotta building contains motifs from classical elements that are "specifically derived from Greek models...but not constrained by them" and that are "derived from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where Hornbostel trained." Thaw Hall was intended as a gatepost or supporting building in the never realized "Acropolis Plan" for Pitts campus, and was designed to work with additional proposed, but never realized, buildings. This is evidenced by the west end of the building that went unfinished with the expectation that construction would continue along in that direction, but was only subsequently connected to the universitys newer engineering facility (now termed "Old Engineering Hall") in 1955. According to Armstrong, Hornbostel used a balcony-like element to set back the upper part of the building so the lower levels could act as a podium in order to "give a horizontal continuity to a chain of buildings that were planned". General motifs repeated in Thaw Hall’s facade include recessed bricks within larger brick columns, as well as deeply recessed windows that are trimmed by decorative brick patterns that vary by floor. The details of the building include ornamental elements reflective of classical design including Doric columns as well as cornice and pediment containing repeating classical terra cotta decorative patterns incorporating waves, palmettes, or leaves, as well as granite rosettes and Greek Key motifs. The words "School of Engineering” is sculpted into the O’Hara Street side of the building above two unfinished stone elements that may have been intended to be sculpted into portraits had the Hornbostel campus plan been fully executed. Armstrong contends that Thaw Hall&#39;s worth as a historic building is demonstrated in Hornbostel’s intentional manipulation of effects of light and shadow by the application of varying amounts of relief to the ornamentation in order to create alternate dark and light patterns that are still observable from a distance, while abating the effect as the viewer looks at the lower parts of the building.</p><br>
<p>The building has several odd architectural elements. Due to an odd numbering decision, there is a sub-basement, a basement and a mezzanine, in ascending order, all of which are above ground, the later two having windowed rooms, with the first floor roughly level with Old Engineering Halls second floor. There is a back corridor on the Mezzanine level (2 stories above ground level), currently housing offices, which can only be accessed by elevator or by walking though one of the classrooms (Thaw 11), passing directly in front of the blackboard at the lecturers level. The Basement level has only a single entrance, located in a recessed door on the stairs leading from the Mezzanine level into SRCC; a single exit, a glass vestibule leading into the OEH turnaround; and an elevator door located inside an office space, which is locked off to external access. The basement level currently houses offices of the Physics department, including incoming grad student offices.</p><br>
<h2>Space Research Coordination Center</h2><br>
<p>The Space Research Coordination Center (SRCC), sometimes referred to as the Space Research Coordinating Center, was completed in 1965 from funding obtained from a $1.5 million NASA grant for studies in the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, and health areas concerned with the aerospace field. The SRCC was constructed as an annex connected to the eastern side of Thaw Hall. The addition includes a common entrance on O’Hara Street for both the SRCC and Thaw Hall that obscured the original Thaw Hall entrance which contained two large Doric columns, ornamentation, and wrought-iron gates. Because of this, a ground level side-door accessible via the basement of Old Engineering Hall is the only direct exterior access to Thaw Hall, with all other access via internal connections from Old Engineering Hall or SRCC. The third floor of the SRCC is connected to the Mezzanine floor (of the basement level which is the second floor above ground level) of Thaw Hall at Thaw Halls original entrance. The design of SRCC in mimics Thaw Hall in the color of the brick and the motif of recessed bricks in the middle of larger brick columns, but contains a flat roof and is absent of ornamentation. Today, the SRCC houses the universitys Department of Geology and Planetary Science as well as offices from other departments including the Department of Physics & Astronomy.</p><br>
<p>Holcomb Valley, located in the San Bernardino Mountains about five miles north of Big Bear Lake, was the site of the most gold mines in Southern California. It was named after William F. Holcomb, who found gold there in 1860. That year started the largest gold rush in the Southern California region. The boomtown of Belleville grew up near there and flourished for about ten years before being abandoned. The site is now registered as California Historical Landmark #619.</p><br>
<h2>Gold</h2><br>
<p>In May 1860, gold was found there by William F. Holcomb and Ben Choteau. They were miners who had been prospecting at Bear Valley. Holcomb found gold while he was tracking a bear in the valley later named after him. After Holcomb and Ben Ware filed mine claims on five sites in May 1860 at the County Recorder&#39;s office, word spread quickly and prospectors rushed to the area.</p><br>
<p>Before long, a gold camp sprang up within 150 inches of where the gold was found. It became a town and, after the first child Belle was born, the new town was named Belleville in her honor. It soon became the largest town in San Bernardino County with a population of about 1,500.</p><br>
<p>Often perpetuated by local newsmen, is the myth that Belleville was almost once the County seat. The story goes that Belleville residents felt they deserved the honor of being the county seat and placed this measure on the ballot in either 1860 or 1861. After the election, ballots were being counted at the County Court House (in San Bernardino City) around an open bonfire when one of the ballot boxes, allegedly from Belleville, was accidentally, kicked into the fire and destroyed. When the count was completed, Belleville had lost the county seat election by the slim margin of two votes.</p><br>
<p>However, the California Constitution allows for a change in county seat only through legislative action in which it may directly decide the location, or delegate the authority to the voters of the county, which would require it to be placed on the local ballot. There was no legislative act on record in State Records to change the county seat from San Bernardino to Belleville, in any year, let alone 1860 or 1861. Any item up for election on the local ballot was required to be posted in the local newspaper. The only items published in both 1860 and 1861 were the names of the people running for office and school bonds. The items up for election are also required to be listed in the Board of Supervisor minutes, there is no such listing for the change of the County seat. Also there is no mention of the election or missing ballots in Holcomb&#39;s recollections which were written in the 1870’s only a few years later at the behest of the San Bernardino Pioneer Society.</p><br>
<p>Belleville was a place filled with rough characters competing over gold, it was considered a place of violence and hanging justice. It was the third and fourth largest town in Southern California during these years</p><br>
<p>Holcomb Valley produced the most wealth from gold of any Southern California mining district. With time, major placer and quartz mining declined, followed by the departure of most of the population of Belleville after 1870. Hard rock mining continued at the Gold Mountain Mine until 1919. Some mining activity continues today, with 2,000 claims by hobbyists.</p><br>
<p>The valley is the site of the Holcomb Valley Scout Ranch (formerly of Old Baldy Council), on the site of the old Hitchcock Ranch. It provides opportunities for youth to have experience in ranching, hiking and related outdoor activities.</p><br>
<p>The Minne Lusa Residential Historic District is located in North Omaha, Nebraska. It is included on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the National Park Service, it is an "example of a substantial, affordable single-family residential development within the city limits that was platted, developed and constructed by a single firm between 1915 and 1941." The neighborhood is filled with bungalows, Craftsman, and other styles that were popular in the era. There are 540 properties in the neighborhood that contribute to the historic district, the other 167 do not. Minne Lusa Boulevard is a contributing structure.</p><br>
<p>The district&#39;s boundaries are Vane Street on the north and Redick Avenue on the south; North 24th Street on the east and North 30th Street on the west. It is located just north of the Miller Park neighborhood, and just south of Florence and includes all of the area originally known as the Minne Lusa Addition. In 2017, the Miller Park/Minne Lusa area was ranked as having the 2nd highest rate of homicides and other violent crimes out of 81 Omaha neighborhoods.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>According to the Omaha Public Library, "Minne Lusa" comes from a Native American word of unknown origins that means "clear water". The Minne Lusa Pumping Station was built at the Florence Water Works north of the area in 1899. Presumably the neighborhood, established 17 years later, took its name from that.</p><br>
<p>The Minne Lusa neighborhood was first platted by Charles Martin in 1916, and by 1923 was a completed development. Southeast of the newly annexed community of Florence, Minne Lusa was touted as the "largest addition ever platted in Omaha." It included 800 lots on 33 blocks. Lot prices ranged from $450 to $1,000. Minne Lusa Boulevard bisected the subdivision and meandered north from Miller Park. Most homes reflected craftsman bungalow and period revival architectural styles. In general, larger homes were constructed on lots fronting Minne Lusa Boulevard while more modest homes were constructed along cross streets.</p><br>
<p>Minne Lusa grew at about the same time that automobiles were becoming affordable in the middle class. Nearly every original home in the neighborhood was built with a garage or had one added soon after. The first steel-frame house in the area, on Iowa Street just north of the district, was built by Henry Neef. That house, the Henry B. Neef House, was listed on the USA National Register of Historic Places in September 2010.</p><br>
<h2>Notable buildings not contributing</h2><br>
<p>Several buildings are located within the geographic boundaries of the district but not considered as contributing to the historic district due to their significant alterations. The original Minne Lusa School was opened as Fort School in 1916. It was moved and rebuilt, opening in 1924 in its current location. The school was updated in 1955, and completed another renovation in 1997.</p><br>
<p>Another local landmark called the Viking Ship is, according to a local neighborhood group, "a building of distinctive architecture at the corner of Minne Lusa Boulevard and Redick Avenue... been known at different times as the Prettiest Mile Club, Hayden House, and the Birchwood Club." It is said to be the oldest building in the neighborhood. The Hayden House eventually took turns moving from the Viking Ship to Eppley Airfield, and was to the Union Station in downtown Omaha. Today it is a fully restored art deco icon that sits in the Durham Western Heritage Museum.</p><br>
<p>The area is home to the former Minne Lusa Theater, a one-screen neighborhood movie house that opened in the mid-1930s along North 30th Street. It seated 400. The theater closed sometime in the mid 50s.</p><br>
<h3>Minne Lusa Water Works</h3><br>
<p>The Metropolitan Utilities District operates a huge system at the Florence Water Works to filter Missouri River water. The Minne Lusa Pumping Station, demolished by the city in the 1960s, was a massive building of Warrensburg sandstone with a central tower rising four stories over an arched entrance. Designed by Omaha architects, it was built in 1889 in a classical style reflecting the influence of the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition. This building contained the high service pump and boilers, and sent the filtered water to city water mains for the entire city of Omaha.</p><br>
<p>The Oscar B. Balch House is a home located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, United States. The Prairie style Balch House was designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1911. The home was the first house Wright designed after returning from a trip to Europe with a clients wife. The subsequent social exile cost the architect friends, clients, and his family. The house is one of the first Wright houses to employ a flat roof which gives the home a horizontal linearity. Historian Thomas OGorman noted that the home may provide a glimpse into the subconscious mind of Wright. The Balch house is listed as a contributing property to a USA federally Registered Historic District.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Oscar Balch House was one of the first homes designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright upon his return from an extended trip to Europe, during which he designed no houses. Wright had traveled to Europe with Mamah Borthwick, a clients wife. This flaunting of public morality lost him friends, clients and his family. Amongst those who by contrast stood by Wright was the interior decorator Oscar Balch. Balch was one of two partners in the decorating firm Pebbles & Balch. Wright had previously designed a building remodel for Balchs storefront on Lake Street in Oak Park, in 1907, a structure long since demolished.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The Balch House is one of Wrights first flat-roofed houses and its proportions are taller compared with later flat-roofed homes he designed. Wright brought new drama to his Prairie style with the addition of the flat roof. The expansive roof further refined the simplicity of Wrights Prairie style house. The house has broad, overhanging eaves, common to Prairie houses and in the case of the Balch House they further emphasize the Prairie theme. The exterior is sheathed in stucco which provides a sculpting effect on the exterior. The original color of the stucco on the exterior is unknown but photographs show that the house has undergone color changes.</p><br>
<p>The design of the house is symbolic in its heightened terrace walls, the security walls and its hidden and obscured entryway. The house clearly shows the signs of someone who feels trapped or "under siege."</p><br>
<p>The first floor plan is similar to the Edwin H. Cheney House; both have a three part first floor layout that includes a library, a dining room and a living room. The interior spaces are separated by "low decks set at the window heads." In the living room the house is anchored by a Roman brick fireplace at its center and there are libraries on either side of two small setback pavilions. These features help the building&#39;s interior flow and symmetry. Copious use of glass brings natural light into the interior.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>The Oscar Balch House represents Frank Lloyd Wrights defiant return to the streets of Oak Park and to architecture after his absence and concurrent trip to Europe with Mamah Borthwick Cheney. The house was called "forged of Wrights personal courage and cheeky moral humbridge" by historian Thomas OGorman. OGorman concluded it was possible that the Balch House provides a rare glimpse into the subconscious mind of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Balch House is an example of Frank Lloyd Wright&#39;s fully mature Prairie style. Its flat roof and horizontal linearity are a continuation of the ideas Wright began to manifest in the Mrs. Thomas H. Gale House in 1909.</p><br>
<p>The Oscar B. Balch House is listed as a contributing property to the Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture Historic District. The historic district was added to the USA National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 1973. The Balch House stands across the street from the home where Ernest Hemingway spent his boyhood years.</p><br>
<p>Walker Falls is a 45-foot cascading waterfall in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Its ease of access makes it a popular destination for Waterfall Hunters. It is in a region of Buncombe County that has a large number of small waterfalls and several larger falls.</p><br>

<p>The falls is viewable on the side of the road. To view the falls, from the intersection of NC 197 and Dillingham Rd. in Barnardsville and go 2.2 miles on Dillingham Rd. to a fork in the road. Take the left fork and go 2.7 miles, when the road turns to gravel and becomes Forest Road 74. Go 2.8 miles more to see a small sliding waterfall. 1.3 miles later, you will come up on Walker Falls. You may then go 4.7 miles further down Forest Road 74 to the parking area for Douglas Falls.</p><br>
<p>If you are coming from the Blue Ridge Parkway, follow Forest Road 63 (if it is not gated) to Dillingham Road. Turn right, and in 1.4 miles you will reach the point where the road becomes Forest Road 74. Continue following the directions as above.</p><br>

<p>Mitchell Falls is a 25 ft waterfall located in Yancey County, North Carolina on the slope of Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain in the Appalachian Mountain chain and highest point in the eastern United States. The falls, the mountain and its related state park are named for Elisha Mitchell, a professor who, while confirming his measurements of the mountain, fell over a rocky ledge above the falls to his death on June 27, 1857.</p><br>
<h2>Visiting the falls</h2><br>
<p>The falls are located downstream from "far downstream of the Mount Mitchell State Park boundary" on a private property hunting reserve. Access to the falls is normally prohibited but has been allowed in the past to groups and photographers by special permission. As the landowner has been an environmentally-conscious steward for the tract of land on which the falls lie, people wishing to visit the falls are highly encouraged to respect this and not to trespass in an attempt to see the falls but wait until such a trip is organized.</p><br>

<p>Occasional published works have erroneously identified the falls which has created some confusion as to which waterfall in the area is actually Mitchell Falls. Kevin Adams&#39; book North Carolina Waterfalls misidentifies the falls from mislabeled photographs by George Masa and Rufus Morgan. The 45 ft falls listed in the Adams book use photographs by George Masa. The author updated his website with the corrected information and acknowledged the difficulty of many people identifying the correct waterfall because of four historical photos. All three falls (Mitchell Falls, those photographed by George Masa, and those photographed by Rufus Morgan) are on private property.</p><br>
